Transcripts

I understand that a jury when deliberating can ask to review certain items of evidence but that they are not allowed the transcript from the courtroom - instead they listen to someone reading it.

What is the reasoning behind witholding the transcripts from them?

The explanation that I have been given is because of the danger that repetition of parts of the evidence tends to re-inforce it in their minds. If the jury were to be given transcripts the danger is that they might focus on particular parts to the exclusion of others and thus not give a balanced verdict.
