Suing a hospital

    Dear all,

My wife had a terrible complications after the labour in one of country's best maternity hospital. The truth is that she has barely made it.
We've spoken to a couple of gynaecologists and after hearing our story they said what happened (without going into much details here) is almost certainly staff's fault.
We were thinking of having more babies but my wife is traumatized now and is afraid of having another child.

Now, the question is - what would be the best option to punish the hospital ?
Sue them ? If so, is it common in Ireland to do that and what are the chances of winning ?
Are there any solicitors out there who would take a case like that ?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

There are plenty of solicitors out there dealing with medical negligence.

The hurdles for proving medical negligence are high in Ireland from my understanding, but you should really go to a solicitor for solid advice on this one.

I read an article recently in the Evening Herald about a patient who is suing the HSE because of inadequate treatment she received. She had a problem with her colon and it ruptured. I still have the article at home, the report contains the solicitor's name who is representing her. I'll dig it out for you if you like. You should give him a call to see what he can do for you.

wow, that was quick! thank you

i wouldnt call it negligence, rather rush.
they did something they should have not - quoting one of the doctors we talked to 'it is something that is mentioned in every book as a certain 'no-no'

It seems that all the hospital staff wanted was to get the bed empty ASAP...

If I were to go to solicitor, what would my options be ?

CK: I would like that, please!
