hi - i am considering buying a jap import (skyline) - i am wondering about how useable it is as a car - i guess my main concern is having to wait for parts ( if and when they go ) to arrive from japan or the uk. i need a car to be fairly reliable and i am wondering how a skyline would compare to a regular modern bog standard avensis or something like that both in terms of how often one would typicaly break down and also how difficult it could be worst case scenario in terms of waiting for parts to come...............................PLEASE someone tell me that skylines ( even 10 year old ones ) are bulletproof and there's a heap of spares at any one time in ireland :) which arrive next working day and are exactly what you want and for a total bargain !!!:D

Can't comment on the Skyline, but my Jap import '91 Integra was generally not a problem when it came to getting parts- brake pads, filters, etc... until a bearing went in the distributor... 6 weeks and quite a lot of money to get one from Honda Japan. None to be had at breakers either, as would be the case with the Skyline.

Long and short: I wouldn't expect a problem with common stuff, tho rare items could take a while.

As with any other 10 year old Jap car, some are in good nick, some aren't. Get a clean one and you should have no real worries.

Id say a few years ago parts for japanese imports would have been hard to get but there are loads of people doing them now. If you get a skyline you will have to take much better care of it than you would with a non performance car. The same way a lot of things will gbe more expensive like oil costing 100 euro to change rahter than 20 etc.

I want an r32 skyline, might be my next car or might be a couple down the line, i would not worry about it breaking down or needing parts at all. Dont get one though if you wont have money to put into it. Also fuel will be fairly expensive, i get about 15mpg in my car, i doubt id get better milage in a skyline.

Also if you get one dont forget to not drive it in high revs till its warm and if it doesnt have a turbo timer let it idle for at least a minute after driving it in any way hard before turning off the ignition.

bloody heck i didnt want to hear that -- that's an aweful lot for oil - what other bits ( other than fuel and parts ) are that expensive - like consumables, filters, wiper blades, plugs, pads, etc. - how much is a typical service ?

( i wont be getting a gt-r if that makes any real difference )

    thanks

i was (and still am) thinkin bout gettin one and a few of my mates have em and most common stuff is well available for them!!

dunno what the story is with 100 euro oil but I know most turbo ones even after bein remapped still need to be ran with pro boost to give more octane to the petrol and thats dear enough!! not sure how much though sorry!!

was actually in flynns in tullow (nissan main dealer) and the parts lad said he'd a parts disc for some jap parts for the r32 r33 and r34 skylines as he gott it cos a regular customer needed a lot of parts for a r34 that'd been crashed!!

windscreen was €500 he told me and any of the glass was really expensive!!

Yeah, I'd say the glass would have to be imported from Japan, unlike most "Japanese" cars we get these days which are built in the UK and elsewhere in Europe along with the glass - look at a Micra for example and you'll see the glass is made by Triplex, Pilkington or some other British company. I'm sure there's other European companies who make replacements windscreens and stuff for more common Japanese-built cars.

All the bogger Nissans we get these days (except the Tiida) are made in Sunderland, and AFAIK they make pretty much everything there (engines and all) so I can see Skyline parts costing a good bit more than these.

where are you? there is a massive scrapyard in south kilkenny in a place called hugginstown owned by a guy called mcbride - the might have a liteace there

also i have used partsgateway.co.uk in the past found to be good

Just remember if your using the car on a daily basis, i.e. commuting then something like a Skyline is probably not suitable for the task. The Skyline is a performance car and as such is more of a weekend or track day car, not a daily commuter to and from work. Also running costs will be a major factor making it uneconomical as a daily runner.

If you still want a Skyline then also consider buying something else that is cheap and cheerful as an everyday car.

the only think with the skyline is that the engine is very highly strung , if you attempt to mod it.... well dont , trust me , you need say 2000 grand for every 1000 you spend incase the car breaks the part or , as they normally do , just blow the head gasket.

apart from that there rather solid , just a turbo version of the sunny & silvia

You really dont have a clue what you're talking about. The sunny silvia engines are sr20's a completely different engine to the rb20/25/26. None of the parts are even remotely alike
