Self Defence tips in Galway Independent

Did anyone catch the "40 ways to stay safe" article this week in the Indo (I think)?
Hopefully the masses don't fall prey to such manipulative and downright dangerous advice!

My favorite tips - "Carry a personal alarm, it will make you feel more confident"

and the piece de resistance - "If you are in an unfamiliar area after dark, don't ask for directions or look at a map as it is obvious you don't know where you are going", presumably muggers only pick on people who are lost AND admit it, as long as you pretend you know where you are going your shields remain up!

Its filled with contradictions as well - one tip encourages you not to wear expensive jewelry out, then later another tip is "conceal expensive jewelry with clothes, scarves etc"

Instead of giving 40 tips on how to be safe on your own after dark they should just have said that if you are really concerned in keeping safe then DON'T be on your own outside after dark!

Just my 2 cents.

depends on where you go. But the Races (or any big festival) for example always draw a dodgy crowd as well...

I guess they could have rather mentioned WHERE not to go, rather than giving silly tips...

Galway is as safe as any other city, you need to know where not to go! I think 40 tips is too many...10 proper ones would have been better!

One tip: Carry something dangerous, so dangerous in fact that no-one will **** with you. You ever see any one get mugged while carrying a sword? Thought not!
