02 Passat TDi - Engine Trouble

I have an 02 1.9 TDi Passat. After a while travelling at 60-70mph the car starts to chug briefly and then is OK again. It also seems to settle down if I change down from 6th to 5th and then back up again.:( Anybody any idea why this might be happening?
