There is no freedom of speech on this this site it is not possible due to the laws in this country.

And where in the charter for this forum does it prohibit 'off topic' posts ?

Each forum has thier own set of rules which are additions to the site rules,
you should take the time to read the charters as they have differences.

Also back seat modding is frowned upon and people have been banned from forums for
    comments like
Off topic post. Deserves a warning.

when they should have used the report post function by pressing this button.

Also you really should read this thread, it might help you ease into the collection of communities here.

You're so literally minded it's worrying. Or at least, it should be.

I'm not talking about "we should murder paedophiles/homosexuals!" posts, I'm talking about a tolerance of an alternative opinion by mods. Seems to be lacking.

OP, have a read of this thread before you move on to Stage 2 of Becoming A "Fight Teh Powah!" Cliché.

Long story short, boards.ie is a privately-owned forum. You're no more legally entitled to freedom of speech here than you are to force your way into some random person's house and park yourself in their living room to watch TV.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,044 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

Saying that any person living in any given area of dublin would be rich enough to never need to make a social welfare claim is not an alternative opinion unless you are using alternative opinion as code for a dumbassed, unsupported, ill tought out generalisation.

So then, it's acceptable to for a mod to come down on Arsenal fans the most, or Sinn Féin supporters the most, to Bertie supporters etc? If boards.ie is and should be run, according to you, on the basis of a Mod's personal whims then all that is acceptable.

Where on earth did I say or imply that? I gave a few examples of what boards is like, not what it should be like in an ideal world. You've been putting quite a few words in people's mouths.

Of course more than one set of opinions is accepted, this wouldn't be much of a forum if they weren't.

You really don't "get" boards, do you? Accept boards as it is, imperfect as it is, stop stressing out over nothing, get over yourself and you'll have a great time.
Still nobody deals with the examples I've given. When there is no answer it's best to say nothing I suppose.

I dealt with your examples. I said "life is unfair". So is boards sometimes. Tough sh*t.

Off topic post. Deserves a warning.
did you become a mod of feedback or something? See, now you're just being silly, and in a little hissy-fit, pointing out other peoples(that you disagree with) apparently off topic posts in an attempt to get them in trouble. Childish.

like thaed said, problem with a post - report it.
So then, it's acceptable to for a mod to come down on Arsenal fans the most, or Sinn Féin supporters the most, to Bertie supporters etc? If boards.ie is and should be run, according to you, on the basis of a Mod's personal whims then all that is acceptable. Freedom of speech IS important, otherwise what's the point of even logging if only one set of opinions counts?

No, boards is not run according to what certain mods like/dislike. each forum has a charter - a set of rules and guidelines as to whats allowed and disallowed on that particular forum. If a mod is out of line for something they do, it is normally addressed fairly promptly and sorted out.

Freedom of speach isnt allowed, because for one, it could end boards.ie up in some serious trouble (legal action, etc) - when you registered to boards, you agreed to the terms/agreements. in that, it says that 'anything you post is owned by boards.ie'. so if something you post, is owned by boards.ie - if you say, slander someone, who gets the blame? there's already another thread on this in feedback anyway.

you got banned because you continued off topic posting after you were warned to stop... i really dont see the problem..

ps. i looked at it, you also argued with the mod on the thread (against the charter).
Still nobody deals with the examples I've given. When there is no answer it's best to say nothing I suppose

you're just pissed off you got banned. take it and get over it.

None of your threads were locked, your account was banned though. Your first ban was for trolling and posting nonsense sitewide (I was responding some reported posts), then you came back and insulted a user who reported you and sent unwanted PMs (another account banned) and now your PINEMARTEN account will be banned also.

Rickybutcher, I'm sure you know as well as I do what people who are big into their online communities are like. They take things like this very seriously. That's fair enough. They may do that for a variety of reasons. But be careful you're not beginning to do the same. It's not good for you. Accept the fact that this place is moderated by people who aren't neccesarily best suited to the role. People are picked becasue they hang around here for long periods of time. It's a kind of self selecting population, if you will. Everyone tot heir own and all that, though.
Boards is a useful tool if there's something in particular that you're interested in, and you can use a particular forum to talk to like minded people once in a while. When it becomes a proxy through which you socialise, and air your opinions, then you'll start to take it seriously too. The problem with that is, you'll end up with something you take too seriously, but have no control over. People will always have control in online fora who probably woldn't ever achieve a position of influence outwith cyberspace. So, it will always be a frustrating place if you spend too long there.

It's the summer time(kind of). Go out and have a few beers. Forget about rules for the sake of rules and pseudo-machismo. Don't worry about bannings and talk of "respect". There's a big world out there, and PI is only a tiny tiny part of it.

Without sounding like a complete snot Ricky, you seem to have a really really bad attitude and I'm not surprised you were banned. You went off topic after being warned, nicely by Victor not to. Since that point your attitude and manners have been atrocious.
Boards is a heavily moderated site and with good reason. It's a cool place to be, and that's because once you've been here a while you realise that shít that is tolerated on other forums simply isn't allowed here. Drop the severe attitude, show some courtesy towards the other posters and mods and you'll be grand.

I think tye problem the OP has is the fact that others also dragged the thread of course and were ignored. Although i agree with the banning it should be seen that bans are handed out to all who violate the charter. I dont think the OP deserves the hiding he is getting here. And i agree with him he shouldn't have to kiss anyones arse to be treated in a "courteous" fashion.

tallaght01, it's come to my attention that you are talking out of your arse.

You're bitter about something to do with boards.ie. I have no idea what this is, but I couldn't give a ****. If it really irritates you that much, why do you bother preaching your idealogy of, "Don't get too worked up about it", when you clearly have a nervous compulsion to respond to any thread where someone is complaining about moderators?

Here's a suggestion; Instead of bitching and whining and being that guy who pokes a stick in from the back of the crowd and then runs away, why don't you highlight any examples of the behaviour you complain about, and/or suggest remedies for the issues as you see them.

Provided you make your suggestions with some degree of thought and civility, you'll be listened to.

    Typical Irish;
    "This place is crap"
"So what do you want us to do about it."
    "I dunno. It's crap though."

Such kind words, Seamus. It's interesting that when anybody posts a complaint about moderation, the usual suspects descend on the op with a humorous predictability. It really is cringeworthy, but nobody ever seems to get that. The pack never thinks they "have an issue" wih the OP.

I often throw in a single post telling the OP that they shouldn't get too worked up about it. I stand by that. But by doing that, that means I "have an issue" with boards.

It's a strange logic, but like I said earlier, everyone to their own.

I thought I was quite civil to be honest. I don't think I said anything abusive. I'm a little confused by your aggressive tone. I think I'm right in saying that it's not a good ide to get stressed about what happenes on an internet forum. I think I'm right in saying that moderation is carried out by people who wouldn't neccesarily be in the role if boards were a for-profit organisation.

I think boards is pretty badly moderated in many cases. But that's fine. It survives despite the moderation situation. Threads getting locked for no reason, people being banned for silly reasons, snotty remarks are all the norm. That's fine too. It's why I stick to mostly posting on one single board where we have a superb moderator. Does this mean I "have an issue?". If it does, then I'll just have to live with that.

Rickybutcher, I think Seamus' post illustrates the point I made previously quite well. Keep your rage for situations that truly warrant it. There's lots of things in tis world to be angry about. You'll exhaust yourself if you get angry about too much too early ;)

It's interesting that when the "usual suspects" listen to a valid complaint on feedback, the people who would normally take the opportunity to insult the moderators are nowhere to be seen.
It's also interesting that any time anyone posts a nonsensical rant about a ban or something else, the usual suspects chirp in with their own tales of woe, with a humourous predictability...

I agree, you were civil. I was curt. I don't get aggressive because quite frankly, it's pointless.

Poor rickybutcher! He's being treated so unfairly.

Firstly, don't you all know that when someone in Malahide can't work due to health problems the many other affluent members of that locality send a young urchin down to the butchers to buy the largest goose in the window and then they all come down and chip whatever they can in to see them through. Then they all sing Christmas carols in the snow and another angel gets his wings.

Because of this nobody in Malahide ever needs any sort of benefit payments.

Secondly, what on earth makes you people think that personal issues should be for dealing with somebody's personal issues when rickybutcher's honour has been offended by people who don't know about this about Malahide? Unable to run anybody through with a rapier he had no choice but to continue spouting shi^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hmake his valid and well-stated points.

Presumably you mean "far rightist" in the above; either that or you're expressing approval for the status quo of boards in a Bill & Ted style.

As for where the thinking is "leading" : hopefully, to a boards.ie where idiot posters who are unable to grasp a simple concept like "if you're banned and don't know why, PM THE MODERATOR OF THE RELEVANT FORUM FIRST, instead of whining about it on feedback and then whining when you get laughed at".

Then you take it to the Help Desk. I recommend avoiding terms like "lobotomite" when you do so; it creates an eau de muppet fragrance around you.
