NO, they will tax it without an NCT

NCT it first then tax it. Don't want to spend money on tax and then find it fails the NCT for something that costs more then the car is worth (+tax) to fix. And then go through the hassle of writing it off to get tax back. Just look for a cancellation, from previous threads ring after 4pm as they appear to release them then.

Saying that you're not legally allowed drive on the road without tax (or an NCT), so have booking letter from NCTS if driving around

It used to be the case where the motor tax office would turn you away if you tried to tax your car without an NCT disc, until some smart citizen rightly pointed out that is was actually illegal to drive your car to the NCT centre for testing without a valid tax disc, so if the motor tax office were refusing to provide a tax disc until an NCT disc was produced, that was effectively putting the vehicle owner in a situation whereby they could never legally bring their car to the NCT centre or else had to commit an offence by driving without road tax to the NCT centre. This little dispute ended up in the district court after Joe Citizen above was done for having no road tax and no valid NCT disc. It turned out at the hearing that there was in fact no legal basis whatsoever for the motor tax office refusing to provide a tax disc to a vehicle owner until he/she had obtained an NCT disc. Some civil servant who was out for a promotion had made up this petty rule to impress his manager and caused a load of people to be stuck in limbo until Joe Citizen won his case and the judge found that there was no basis for this rule and it's existance meant that legally, a vehicle owner was stuck in limbo or was forced to break the law by driving in a public place with no road tax.
