Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've read a few reports online about Elite consoles possibly being afflicted with the dreaded Ring of Death.

What do you guys reckon, will it be more reliable then the current model?

All the newer consoles come with an additional heatsink and epoxy around the chips to hold them more securely. We don't know if this solves the problem though

We probably won't know till the euro-version of the ELITE launches here and someone cracks it open to see if it differs from the US version.

However the US versions do/have suffered from the red rings.

That being said, not all 360s suffer from this problem and MS do fix it free of charge.

It's just from reading stories online it seems like I should nearly EXPECT to my X Box to crash at some stage.

I'm hoping to buy an elite next month when they come out but the hardware issues are putting me off.

There is a highish failure rate but that shouldn't worry you too much. I know loads of people who've had 0 problems with it. Only one of my friends has had an incidence of the red lights and that was after he accidentally kicked the 360.

If this is a big factor for you and you are very worried then you should save your money for another 3 months and wait for the 65nm version. Otherwise go for it and enjoy it before the summer and your playing time is gone

I read the Elite has an extra heatsink built in, which could help.

Is the 65nm version called the Falcon?

What's the best way to play the X Box so it doesn't overheat?

Just keep it in a well ventilated area, make sure the vents aren't covered and avoid multihour gaming binges. Turning it off at the wall when finished might help.

lots and lots of these? :D
should be going cheap seeing as retailers probably have stockpiles that they got for the incredible summer we were promised!!!

" Highish " in this case being at least 15% with some retailers reporting as high as 30% , for any piece of hardware this is not just high , this is at least a 1 in 6 failure rate and is catastrophic !

Microsoft have already allowed for a 1 Billion dollar hit in repair costs , if the company wasnt so huge they would be in serious financial trouble !

One thing is for sure , with a failure rate like that , it is highly unlikely that any of these consoles will still be working in 3 years time , and second hand value for these consoles must be practically zero.

The Lada of the console world , they all seem likely to fail at some point and will never survive to take a place in a future " classic console " collection.

Lada is unfair, possibly alfa romeo, lotus or maserati but not Lada

Yes but it won't be available until after the launch of Halo 3. There also also plans to release a 45nm console before Christmas 2008.

We don't know when the 65nm machines will be released and they won't be called the falcon. Thats just the rumoured internal name for them. There will be no noticeable changes to distinguish them externally.

I'm buying an Elite at Xmax and I've read from various websites that the Elite machines will ship with the 65nm in October/November. How will we know if the 65nm is in the Elite and that its not a system that was shipped in September??

The only way to be sure is to take it out of the box and look at the manufacture date, but what shop is going to let you do that.

The only sure fire way to get a 65nm cpu core 360 is buy one next year form a large busy retailer.

BTW its not only the Elite that will have the 65nm cpu, all 360s will have it from then on.
