In fairness most zombie scenarios postulate the newly dead rising from the grave and spreading the "infection" by biting the living. No one is really at much risk in that case, any more than they would be at risk from say an outbreak of rabid dogs. I mean think about it - where are the freshly dead mostly stored? Mortuaries, funeral homes, places like that, which are ordinarily very secure with their own guards. Breaking into one of those places is tough, for a low intelligence shambler breaking out would be very difficult.

Even the really fast zombies would be tagged long before they got more than a couple of dozen people (and those dozen wouldn't get the chance to nail anyone else once people are alerted), and the thing about the shambling dead is they don't actually drive cars, so we're talking about ten days to two weeks for infection to reach Galway from say Dublin. Geographically they just can't do it. Also its not like they have a coherent strategy so they would simply be mopped up. 99% survival rates would not be out of the question.

The problems start if there are other vectors besides bites. Prime examples would be:

a) the zombification affects animals besides humans, in particular insects like moquitoes or midges.
b) its a spiritual malaise or some sort of reaching from the dark side effort.
c) Its an airborne disease, like Captain Trips in Stephen King's "The Stand".
d) Radiation or similar.

Once again, its no problem if it only affects the dead. The mobile dead can be easily isolated and dealt with. Your survival chances drop dramatically if it starts knocking down the living and healthy at random.

Edit: Also a lot of zombie movies miss the point that the most vicious, cunning, bad-attitude-laden predators on earth are now, and always have been, average humans.

I need a weapon of some sort and more canned goods... The place im staying now is reasonably safe and not super easy to get to but I recently moved so I don't know the area as well as the place I grew up.

Less population here though so that's good in a way.

Zombie infestations wouldn't be so serious if people remained cold and calm and methodical. But no - they always panic and crash cars and expose fortified areas by being stupid.

You don't want to be over-run by idiots trying to get into your hideout spot because they can't find their own.

I think the real secret to survival is being as scared of the uninfected as the zombies during a breakout. Of course you don't want to be on your own either so you really need to pick out your chosen few now...
