timing chain corolla

just bought my first car a 2000 toyota corolla, its an english car and has 60,000 miles on it. whats the storey wit the timing chain when shud it be replaced? cheers lads

Not if it is a timing chain.

If it is a VVTi engine then it has a timing chain not a belt. The timing chain is guaranteed to last for at least 150k miles afaik.

OP, to be sure though ring a Toyota dealer and they should be able to verify either way.

Just as a side note keep an eye on the oil level, Toyota had a few issues with certain VVTi engines back then using alot of oil, they replaced most engines experiencing these issues even outside of warranty.

cheers.... the guy i bought it off worked in a toyota dealership as a mechanic and now just imports toyotas from england and nct/vrt them on date of sale he said the timing chain didnt need replacing and seems genuine however my cousin who is a mechanic with renault says it shud be changed! thanks for the help il get on 2 a dealer

The Renault mechanic is possibly assuming it is a timing belt. Timing Chains are a more reliable system and by definition last longer.

No harm in hearing it from a Toyota dealer though.

You dont need to replace the timing chain ever, they only go if they have been starved of oil the will go rattly first and by that stage youl have to replace the VVTi controller at the same time aswell.
