Note to self : Don't buy a Vitara. Seriously though, Gil, I really and truly hope this works out and this guy gets caught ASAP.

It's early days, but I'm not holding out much hope either way Ned. To be honest, I'd buy another Vitara if I had the cash. Great little car, with a real 4WD low box too.

Thanks for all the kind words folks - I'll show them to herself when she gets back from Finland.

wow the drivers side looks like it took a real battering someone was seriously watching out for you Gil for you not to have been seriously injured from the looks of those pictures.

hope you seriously catch the fucker who did this

best of luck finding out who was responsible for this, gil. i drive the M1 a lot and there is some daft behaviour going on. glad to see you're both ok after it.

Hope that fúcker gets caught, your lucky to be alive.

Cant believe (actually I can, sadly) that someone who caused that just ****ed right off, knowing that he may have killed two people.

It would take a certain breed to do something like that. I hope you catch him. It would be great if this thread assists in any way.

I hope he's found alive and well with a wallet full of 50's in his arse pocket. Handcuffing a soggy corpse must be a terrible thing to do.... ;)

Having seen the photos of the damage I'm amazed that you and your better half ;) are in one piece, not in hospital or worse. As a big fan of "my name is Earl" :o , I firmly believe that Karma will f~ck him up in the near future.:D

Just a quick note to wish you both well.

I drove by you Monday morning, when the fire truck was still there. Looked like you'd skidded on the roof all the way to the emergency lane, thank God - I remember shuddering at the thought of what might have happened if you hadn't (I lost a close friend many years ago, when her AX likewise overturned but she came to rest in the middle of the motorway - and the truck following close by didn't have time to swerve or break :( ).

For what it's worth, I didn't see any dark SUV parked up between there and the airport (in case the guy had belated shakes/remorse/whatever  ).

    Yep,

Full registration number and drivers name required to make a claim. And it must be confirmed that the driver had no insurance.... :o

My insurers tell me there's nothing they can do - Won't even pay the recovery charge from yesterday as my insurance is only TPFT. So, another 190 notes down the toilet on top of the loss of vehicle, medical expenses and so on.

Ah well, life goes on, and that's the main thing.

    Hi Gil

I must say its a small world!

Sorry to hear about your unexpected expenses etc but I am glad to hear you eventually took out advise and got yourself checked out.

Like I like to say to people, vehicles, possessions etc can be replaced, the people in or attached to them cannot. Remember that and keep moving forward.

    Stay Safe

Fair play to you and your buddy for stopping there Shane - I'm sure you were only up that time of the morning to get somewhere else! :D Yeah - I should have got strapped up for c-spine straight away when you suggested it, but I was terrified all my hill-kit would go walkies from the jeep if it was left in it when it went to a scrap yard, and that would have really ruined my day altogether. As promised though, I went straight to the hospital when I was done with the Gardaí and the recovery lads.

PM me there with your own details, I want to have a quick chat with you about something work related....

    Cheers,

    Gil

PS: Thanks all for the kind words and best wishes - It means a lot to really see this community pulling together....

So you and your colleague were the ambulance crew attending to OP and his girlfriend?

Fair play to ya! And amazing stuff that you are posting here. Adds to the hope of finding the driver that caused the accident too...

Yes that would be us, we just happened to be passing and stopped to assist prior to the arrival of Dublin Fire Brigade (which is a separate service).

I think other posters have mentioned this but it's not often you read something posted that really moves you. Gil, sorry to hear about what happened to you. I hope you are not too shaken up by the whole situation. I also really hope the other driver is caught.

A few years ago my car was written off in an incident and it really does put things into perspective when something like that happens. The financial hit is one thing but that pales in comparison to the worst case scenario where serious injuries could have been caused or lives lost.

Anyway, best of luck tracking down the other driver. I will mention this to others here in Galway. You never know, maybe the other driver will come West!

Just added two pictures now of the Series II (2002-2004) model LR that I believe hit me - Maybe someone with tech smarts will do the thing to show them in the post? Just to reiterate, if you see it, all I need is the location and registration number - The Gardaí are more than happy to do the rest on this one ;)

Gardaí will be checking toll booth footage from NTR, but that won't necessarily give them a location of the vehicle. Don't worry - I have friends in all the LR clubs in Ireland, they'll do their bit I'm sure to help spread the word to specialists and dealers.....Even if I was silly enough to drive a Suzuki ;-)

Thanks for the kind words lads,

    Gil
Hey Gil - firstly I'd just like to wish you + your girlfriend all the best, from the pictures and story it looks like an absolutely horrific thing to have happened. Hopefully Karma catches up with the guy.

I'd just like to ask about how the CCTV footage checking went? Seeing that the 2 of you were nearly killed, this incident should be treated very seriously by the Gardai. Regarding the M50 toll booth, a guy that I used to play football with worked for the company that installed/repaired the cameras at the toll bridge. From what he was saying, it's fairly sophisticated stuff - Gardai use it to track movements of certain undesirables.

So my point is - if the guy went through the M50 toll booth that morning, and it's only probably a window of a half hour or less from the time of the accident, his reg should have been caught on camera and that information should be available to the Gardai.

Jeezras... only reading this thread now - your Vitara looks like it held up pretty well (rollbar over the centre of the roofline). Glad to hear you's are okay.

I hope the knacker in the Landrover gets what's coming - you should put your story and those pics to the local papers, even the freebies like the Northside people. Might get some memories jogged.

Also, might be worth heading over to the DCAL103.2 forum (ie. from the Dublin City Anna Livia radio station) and making a post. There a lot of professional roadies on there, truck drivers and the like. Someone somewhere will have seen something

Gil, I know it's probably of little value to you but know, at the very least, that the cowardly bastard/bitch that did that will have what they did on their conscience for the rest of their lives. I don't think anyone other than a sociopath could handle that.

Out of curiousity, has your attitude to life changed at all ?

    Hey Gill!

    Glad all's ok
Just wanted to point out that you canclaim off the MIBI, you do not need the other peoples details (thats the whole point of them) They will cover all the medical expenses and personal injury claim etc, but if you want to claim for the car, and to make sure MIBI dont try and make you liable for the incident, then get a motor assessor to do an assessment on the vehicle, although you do have the pics, so that shouldnt be a problem, even though its probably too late now and the car is crushed?

Either way, I know you want to bring that guy to justice, but its unlikely. The MIBI can take time and be a bit drawn out, they have to wait for Gardai to finish their investigations to confirm that the LR isnt identified first but then you can claim.
You can either claim directly with the MIBI or get a solicitor to do it for you, the latter probably being the best option to keep you posted.

P.s I work in the claims area of motor insurance...if u need advise, drop me a pm.

    Spy

Just wanted to reply to a few of your comments - No offence intended if I miss anyone! ;)

Cheers Frank - That's a great idea. I've been hanging around with Mitch M. for too long this week - Two cronies with knackered backs and an absense of brainpower it seems! :p

I wouldn't be so sure dude. I've met some nasty pieces of work in my time that I know with 100% certainty feel no remorse for doing things far worse than the guy who was behind the wheel of that landy did to me and the GF. (She's doing fine by the way - sore back and aching muscles too but otherwise okay).

I really don't think this has changed my outlook on life - I try to stay positive as much as I can day to day because my job is basically fixing other peoples problems. I guess right now I'm busy fixing my own problems (transport and the finacial ramifications etc).... Perhaps when the dust settles on this whole thing, I'll reconsider my position in the greater scheme of things, but right now, business is business. I'll tell you one thing though - It sure as hell has changed my outlook on vehicles..... Pity. I'd always wanted a vintage Suzuki GS and only bought one 10 days before the crash - that's up for sale now as a consequence of the Vitara's demise. It's a double edged sword really, financial pressures (I don't 'Do' carloans) and confidence in my safety on the road.... So, yeah, maybe I'm valueing my own safety a little more than I did last week :D I want to be around for those who mean the most to me for a long time to come..... Jaysus, now I'm thinking. There goes the nights sleep! :p

    ......

On the whole 'follow up' end of things - I've to give the Gardaí a call tomorrow to find out what's what with their investigations. I'd like to put it all behind me, so if they don't have anything from the tolls footage/traffic management cameras etc., I'll just move on with things for the time being. I'm definately going to take your advice on the MIBI thing Spy - I've paid a lot of insurance over the years and part of it is for just this type of event....I want to see the benefit of my premia when I'm 'entitled' to it. Thanks for the pointers.

I'll keep everyone up to speed on here. Someone else mentioned how a thread can sort of move you in a way. Now don't go losing the run of yourselves when you read this - I mean, we all have offline friends too of course....But let me just say that the kind words here really hit the spot and helped me keep the chin up.... Thanks. Long live community spirit and cameraderie, eh? :)

Don't let sleeping dogs lie, or the next person he clips may not be as lucky. So far, he probably thinks, as he's a nothern reg, that he's scott-free.

    Hi Gil

DCAL came to mind for me also - They have access to the cameras I think and the radio show during rush hour attracts a decent listenership.
With a bit of luck maybe they will be able to help.

I really hope you get the justice and peace you deserve.

    Mic.

    Hi all,

The helpful Gardaí who attended are working nights at the moment and will be spending this very evening working their way through roughly 30 minutes of northbound traffic to see if the toe-rag came through the M50 on the morning of the 'alleged incident'.....

    Fingers crossed and all that.

    Gil
