Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sat Nav or Laptop with satnav software

I had been thinking about buying a portable SatNav system but now I see that there is Sat Nav software available for laptops.

    Two questions:
    1. Is this software any good?
    2. Is extra hardware required to pick up the signals?

    I'd appreciate any views.

I'm sure there is good software available and you'll need to get a USB/Bluetooth GPS reciever.

Only issues is using it. Setting a laptop up in a car so that you can see and hear it safely would be difficult. Can't leave it on the passenget seat, as that would involve a lot of twisting to see it and placing it on the dash would block a large part of your windscreen. Also to place on the dash or mount somewhere on the centre console would involve having to make a secure mount for it, wouldn't want a laptop flying around in a crash!

You would then have a laptop sitting in your car when parked up, with all your personal data on it. IMO you'd be better off getting a standalone one, they are down to €160-€200 now.

    Del.

    Thanks for the response.

I'd only really use SatNav for my trips abroad with the family. I wouldn't really have much use for a SatNav in Ireland.

I think the advantage of bringing a laptop on holliers instead of a standalone SatNav is that it could also be used as a DVD player to keep the kids occupied and as access to the internet as more and more places are being set up with Wifi.

However, looking at the prices of USB GPS receivers, along with the software, this option would not be a whole lot cheaper than the standalone option.
