This article highlights how even one of the most tech savvy cities in the world is running into problems with its Wifi plans. At least in SF's case the problem is not the EU.

Cork has had metropolitan WiFi since 2005. It's run by Smart Telecom.

It was initially free, but I don't think it's free anymore.

It gives free access to municipal and national government websites as well as the EU institutions.

and covers most of the city centre.

It was all hype when it launched, but I have rarely seen anyone actually using it.

The problem is that a) Irish weather sucks and the signals were largely only good outdoors and
    b) Who uses their laptop in a park ?

Similarly, eircom's WiFi enabled payphones seem like a good idea, until you think of how you'd actually use one!

Internet tablets are all the rag with the young people these days, you can get ones around the 100 euro mark from nokia. As such I can see this type of thing having far more appeal in the future.

    Where?
    I'll buy it tommorrow.

The €99 was a special offer of 500 to developers. The N800 is like €400. UMPC tablets over €1500

You could always get a Nintendo DS..
