The athletics programme of the World University games gets underway later today in Bangkok. The Irish team is as follows:

    Anna Boyle (100m & 200m)
    Fionnuala Britton (Steeplechase & 5k)
    Deirdre Byrne (1500m)
    Thomas Chamney (800m & 1500m)
    Mark Christie (1500m & 5k)
    Mary Cullen (5k)
    Orla Drumm (1500m)
    Eoin Everard (800m)
    Martin Fagan (5k & 10k)
    Sharon Heveran (High Jump)
    Joe McAlister (Half Marathon)
    David McCarthy (400m & 800m)
    Ailis McSweeney (100m)
    Eileen O’Keeffe (Hammer)

Some of the athletes (Cullen and Fagan included) don't seem to be in the entry lists listed on the competition website, but that is the official team from the AAI website.

Results can be found here: http://www.bangkok2007.com/en/main/index2.php

    Any predictions for medals?

O' Keefe has an excellent chance of medal.

    Direct link to Athletics Results

    Bangkok is 6 hours ahead.

We usually manage to pick up a few medals at this level. O'Keeffe must be a prospect.

    D. McCarthy DNS in the 400m, so he must be focusing solely on the 800m.

Ailis McSweeney and Anna Boyle both ran 12.13 to qualify for the 100m 1/4 finals (finishing 2nd and 4th in the respective heats)

O'Keefe goes in the hammer "final" later

Eileen won silver! Remarkably solid throwing gave her the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best throws of the day.

Her best was 68.46. Only 28cm behind the winner, Darya Pchelnik of Belarus

    Congrats to her!

In the 100m W, Ailis McSweeney ran 11.92 and finished 4th to make the semis. Anna Boyle finished in 6th in her heat with 12.03 and ranked 24th overall

Fantastic news, fair play to her. Bodes well for Osaka; she'll be full of confidence after her performance today.

I would also like to add my congratulations to Eileen. This is a major step-up for her. Don't mind the distance, she was capable of getting in there in the white cauldron of competition and producing the goods. The competition will bring her on enormously as, unlike participants in other disciplines, Eileen hasn't been able to take part in very many competitions of this standard and the more of this type of competition she gets the better she's going to get. She'll probably need around 70m to qualify for the final in Osaka. I wouldn't bet against her.

S Heveran and Chamney failed to qualify in the HJ and 800m respectively. D. McCarthy through.

Ailish McSweeney finished 8th in her 100m semi.

This isn't neccesarily athletics related, but just to add that our Female golfers have added Ireland's second and third medals to our tally in the shape of an Individual gold and a team silver.

The women footballers lost 2-1 to brazil in the bronze medal match (after losing to Russia on penalties in the semi!) Ouch
