When though? Last summer it was a case of Torres OR Bent, and i'm far happier we got Torres. Not a chance we could afford Bent in January. Wouldn't mind a cheaky approach for him in the summer now, maybe 10mill. Would be rejected immediately, but would give Bent himself some food for thought, and if he dug his heals in we could probably get him at a decent enough price.

If we were to sell Kuyt and Voro, and bring in 1 top class forward, i stil think it might be a good idea to put in a smallish bid for Jones, say 6 or 7million. It will depend on Sunderlands situation come the summer obviously, if they dont need money they won't be selling cheap.

To be honest i wouldn't mind Jones at Liverpool, but more in the context of having Torres, Crouch, Jones and Huntelaar/Benzema as our 4. Not being forced to rely on him for goals, but if he comes good, then good stuff. He's just built perfectly for the premiership imo.

Significantly, Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, whom the ECHO can reveal was a boyhood Liverpool fan, has now taken a personal interest in making the deal happen.

Now I couldn't care less about the boyhood Liverpool fan bit but the bit about him taking a personal interest in this deal is - if true - a very good sign.

Incidently it's a year to the day since Gillet & Hicks took over at Anfield - and what a turbulent year it's been

I would pick Jones over bent any day. I reckon hes going to be a great player. And he offers a target aswell. His leap is something else.

    www.breakingnews.ie

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has called for everyone associated with the club to unite after weeks of turmoil on and off the pitch.

The club's American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have fallen out of favour with Reds fans, due in no small part to Hicks revealing the club had spoken to former Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann as an "insurance policy" against current manager Rafael Benitez leaving the club.

Fans stayed behind on the Kop after Saturday evening's Premier League game against Sunderland to protest against the owners, with some carrying banners calling for Dubai Investment Capital to step forward and take over the club.

Parry believes the constant speculation surrounding the Reds - coming from inside and outside the club - has been harmful and sought to draw an end to the disharmony in his LFC Magazine column.

"This is not the Liverpool we all know and love," he said.

"It has never been our style to wash our dirty linen in public and it is never pleasant for anyone when it happens.

"The sooner we can put all of this behind us and get back to the Liverpool way the better. That's certainly not pointing the finger at anyone. It's a hard fact of life in football that any negative publicity quickly leads to further headlines and debate.

"You learn to live with it. What really frustrates me is when outsiders start having a go. When this happens you know instinctively it's time to unite, draw some strength from our togetherness and get back on the rails."

Another apparent bone of contention has been the club's plans for their new stadium, which were revised when the initial costs were deemed to be too high.

Parry is adamant the new ground, scheduled for completion in 2011, will still be something for the club to be very proud of.

"When we said we were revising things, perhaps there was a bit of consternation that we were somehow going back to the drawing board to make dramatic alterations," he added.

"In fact, it was a case of looking at some costs to see if we could make them more efficient.

"Could we look at some aspects of the build to make it work better without losing the impact of the design that had made it so special? That is exactly what has happened and our plans remain on course."

Meanwhile Javier Mascherano expects his permanent deal to join the club to be completed this week.

The Argentina midfielder told Clarin newspaper: "I think it will take no longer than this week.

"I want to stay at the club because I'm playing very often and I feel very comfortable.

"I would not like packing again."

    LIVERPOOL SUPPORTERS UNION
    "Sons of Shankly"

You may or may not have heard of us. But here's a little bit about who we are.

To do exactly as it says on the tin. A Union for all Liverpool Supporters.
A voice that represents us all. A platform for us all to stand together and fight for what we believe in.

It is early days, and more details of how the organisation will grow will appear over the next few weeks and months. But the catalyst for our formation.....

We want Tom Hicks and George Gillett out of our club - why?

THEY LIED & HAVE JEOPARDISED OUR CLUB FOR THEIR PERSONAL GAIN

They promised that all loans would be would be secured against their own personal assets.

    THEY LIED

•They have taken out a loan of £350m. £105m has been secured against the club and £245m against Kop Holdings – which owns 100% of Liverpool Football Club and has only one source of revenue: The Club.

•So, regardless of the smoke and mirrors, Liverpool Football Club has to pay all of the interest on all of the £350m.

•The interest payments alone for this debt will be around £30m each year. All of which will be payable by Liverpool FC – more than enough to wipe out the club's operating profit.

•Gillett and Hicks have only taken out this new loan over an 18 month contract. This is very unusual for a deal of this size; three years is the usual minimum term. Wall Street analysts believe that this is because they had difficulty in getting the banks to lend them the money. Which raises questions about:

    THE STADIUM

• £60m of that loan has been earmarked for starting construction of the new ground.

•There is no funding yet in place to complete the stadium, nor has planning permission been granted for a 71,000 capacity. Existing consent is for 60,000, with any increase depending upon improvements to transport and car parking. With no underground car park, the new plans have less car parking than the original 60,000 design!

•If they can't borrow again in 18 months then they cannot complete the stadium. How can they pledge now that the stadium will be built? In the same way they pledged it would be well on its way to completion twelve months ago – by misleading us.

•So do they actually intend to complete the building of the new stadium?

•Should Hicks & Gillett get the loan to actually build the new ground, the additional interest payments will be £25m per year.

•This will leave Liverpool Football Club to shoulder annual payments of £55m in interest alone. Which begs the question:

WHERE WILL THE FUNDS COME FROM FOR TRANSFERS?

• When they took over, Hicks & Gillett promised to back the manager in the transfer market.

•From the two transfer windows Hicks and Gillett have owned the club for, Benitez has spent £48.5m on players, and recouped £33.5m in player sales. A net spend of £15m. This is the up-to-date figure that includes the purchase of Skrtel and the sale of Sissoko.

•The club brought in around £30m from the run to the Champions League Final last season alone. On top of this there is the increased TV money the club's has received.

•Where is the money Gillett and Hicks have backed the manager with? They've lied to us, they've manipulated the press, and some people have believed the spin. We won't.

•In reality, after all the talk about money and Snoogy Doogy, the manager has spent £15m in the last two transfer windows. How is that backing him in the transfer market?

It is about time the real picture was painted for all Liverpool fans out there.
They promised to respect the club's heritage, history and traditions.

    THEY HAVE LIED AND LIED.

They asked to be judged on what their actions. Well they have failed to make a start or produce the funding on the stadium, the major reason why David Moores looked for investment, they have failed to back the manager in the transfer market, They have not put one single cent of their own money into this club and they have undermined the traditions of the football club and the office of manager.

They have, however, managed to create huge debt for LFC to pay off without any end product.

How, exactly, is the football club in a better position now than it was twelve months ago under David Moores?

After the Sunderland game, we staged a 15 minutes stay behind protest at the end of the game. We intend to do the same again.

During the protest, Steve McManaman commented on Setanta that the Americans had backed the manager in the transfer market, secured their new loan bringing money into the club, and we should all forget about it and move on. We don't blame McManaman, a fair number of good Reds have been won over by their spin, so why shouldn't a blue?

So it's time to spread the message and get the real goings on from within Anfield to a wider audience.
It's about time the truth was exposed.
Hicks and Gillett have to be forced out of Anfield before they wreak more havoc.

Keep a look out for www.sonsofshankly.com which will be going live in the next few days. We'll be handing out flyers at the match with details of any future events.

We'll announce any future meetings on our website, everyone invited, all opinions welcomed.

Please send this announcement on to everyone you know. And keep an eye on our website for further updates and how to get involved.

The next meeting is scheduled for The ******* at 12pm on Saturday 16th February – before the Barnsley game.

    The *******
    99 West Derby Road
    Liverpool
    L6 2AF

Everybody welcome - See you all there.

Yea, DIC are rumoured to be on the verge of making a formal offer. TBH, i think its only a matter of time, the re-financing achieved by G&H was really only to put them into a stronger position for when they sell, after all, it was only an 18month deal so they are going to have to re-finance all over again in a year and a half.....come one DIC, get in here!

ok, now heres where your putting words in my mouth.

i was talking about the "sons of shankly", sounds like a cult. i'm all for exploring the options available as far as buying out the americans, theres no need to sound like a bunch of crazys about it.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,254 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dub13

I dont think SOS sounds like a cult, we all have to row in behind this its time to stand up and be counted,Liverpool fans pride ourselves as been different from the other clubs fans so its time to prove it.Many of us laughed when Malcolm glazer took over at Man You,we said he would put them into massive debit and raise ticket prices etc etc.

Well its happening to our great club now and its time we all supported this and make a difference.G&H have no cash but more importantly in my opinion they have no class, they don't understand the great history of our club and how we do things we are different lets prove it.

I'll believe it when i see it(D.I.C.)that is,but if it happens rafa will have some real money to spend and wont be signing squad players anymore.Imagine what he could do if he had the resourses of grant or fergie. He has only spent over 20m once and look what he did then(Torres).Anyways here's hoping:)

    From BBC

2053: Some news from Sevilla. Fernando Torres limps out of Spain's friendly with France after 23 minutes suffering from a hamstring strain.

How many goals will Voronin and Kuyt get between them?

Kuyt and Crouch against Chelsea :(

Unless he plays Babel up top with Crouch?? id like to see that if Torres is out. Give Babel a chance up front.

Nah. keep him for the last half an hour and hope he comes on and scores like he has done a few times.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I can live with Torres out for a week or two if Crouch leads the line pref with Benny behind and Gerrard right, Babel for the last 25.

    Mike.

Think that Crouch could do the job and it may be just the chance he needs to stake a claim on a starting place for a while.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,254 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dub13

This is the last thing we needed right now but we will just have to deal with it and move on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

To be honest a few weeks rest might not be such a bad thing anyway - Torres has the weight of being expected to score every game bearing down on him. Seeing others rise to the occasion would be good for him and the team as a whole.

Nah - for mike65's benefit Rafa will probably go with something along the lines of

    Kuyt
    Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt
    Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt
    Kuyt - Kuyt

    Or maybe even
    Kuyt
    Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt
    Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt - Kuyt
    Kuyt

Or maybe 3 across the back deploying Kuyt & Kuyt as wing backs.

    Who knows really ... :p:D

I like Crouch, but i do have question marks over his attitude though.

I can just see Crouch disappearing from the game, even though Kuyt might not be in the best form, disappearing is one thing he'll never do. he offers something to the team always, same cannot be said for the big man.

I thought it was because he was spending too much time setting up his own fashion label - DKNG - Dirk Kuyt No Goals

Personally if Crouch only featured for half the game and scored, I would prefer that to a lot of huffing and puffing and a nil all draw.

Might be frustrating but there is nothing wrong with our work rate at the moment, its the bit of class and skill that we need.

Completely agree. Kuyt doesn't offer enough where we need him - even if you accepted that he doesn't score enough he just doesn't offer a threat often enough.

he might have the attitude but thats not enough at premiership level.one goal from open ply in the league this season?? i like kuyt but for 10 million he really is looking like a waste.hes alot better then vorinan but atleast he was free.
to be fair i think crouch has a great attitude the man has been stuck on the bench for most of the season and has taken it on the chin, plus when ever he comes on he scores more often then not,hes a great option to have and i defo think he should be starting alongside torres.
