I don't think Rafa would sell Kuyt.

    Say we sell the following:
    Kyut
    Pennant
    Voronin
    Rise

I'm sure we'd get 20 million for them. Kewell's out of contract.
That's my point though, you won't get anything like £20m for those four players! You'll also leave the team weakened on the right-hand side as both Kuyt and Pennant will be gone. Having said that, maybe El Zhar or Anderson could make the step up to the first team.

None of the big spenders will come in for any of those players, they will be moving downwards, not cross ways or upwards.

Kuyt - 6.5m (remember, he is no longer a Dutch international)
    Voronin - 1.5m
    Pennant - 3.5m
    Riise - 3.5m

Your figures for Voronin and Pennant are too low.

Yes but he still signed before you won the league did he not? You made it sound like he came to England to join the champions.

no, he came to england to sign for the team that was top of the league, sorry if it sounded otherwise.

just sounded like some of ye were trying to excuse ye not signing him, as he ended up playing for leeds.

and even if he hadnt been great for ye, he wouldnt have been at united which would have been a major thing

i wouldnt sell pennant still think he can come good he had a good spell end of last season and start of this before he got suspended then injured

My valuation is Euro, are those sterling quotations? If they are, then we are about even.

I think we would get much more for Rise and Pennant. I agree with Voronin, I dunno where he would go.

I would rather see some of the reserves move up. Although I remember reading a quote before, Shankly or Paisley said it i think, that it is a bad idea to introduce young players to a team that is struggling as they could be affected confidence wise.

i wouldnt sell pennant. hes a handy player to have about.
we need a right sided player like him tho, except better of course. someone that can take on full backs and open up space. mancini would be very good to get but i cant see him moving to pool.
when pennant came on against inter it allowed us to open them up just a bit and for kuyt to squeeze in a goal. thats how teams like utd, arsenal and chelski are putting teams to the sword while liverpool stutter to draws. we arent using the width of the pitch and most of our attacks go to pot. Torres doesnt get enough space to do his thing as our creative players drift towards the centre whenever they receive the ball, even babel. Pennant likes to run at players and get out wide which is an aspect that is sorely missing from our game.
if i could transplant 2 players from the other top teams it would be Joe Cole and Adebayor (yes i know drogba and ronaldo are better but buying players of that calibre and price in 1 summer is beyond us imo). we would have creativity and width in cole and a head the ball finisher with adebayor

Granted he got too assists recently but as a winger for a "top 4(top 5 at this stage) club" he's not good enough. Utd, Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea and Man City all have better wingers.

He didn't come to England to sign for Leeds. He had trials at Sheffield Wednesday. Made a couple of appearances for them. It wasn't like Leeds were this massive club who beat of stiff competition from top clubs in England and Europe to sign him. At the time, they took a chance on a fairly unknown player.
Leeds got stick for selling him for a million, but maybe it was only Utd that he would performed the way he did, i.e if Leeds had kept him and refused Utd's offer, then maybe he wouldn't have turned into the player he became.
Equally, if Souness had signed him for Liverpool, it mightn't have worked out and he might have just faded into obscurity. History is changed at the slightest detail sometimes

ill let it go now because its potentially ruining the thread.

i know we didnt beat off loads of clubs but the way some people were talking it was as if why would liverpool sign him, sure he ended up playing for leeds, as if they were a midtable club.

and yes, perhaps he would have been ****e at liverpool, but he also wouldnt have played for man united, and if he didnt, who knows how they would have done

on the subject of the leeds united/eric cantona thing, i will add this, he joined a team that had finished 4th the season before he came, and had been promoted the year before that, he was joining what was seen as a rising club in the english game. he did have a big impact on helping them win the league, you cant properly judge a players contribution to a team purely on goals

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 10,259 ✭✭✭✭Melion

I dont think Pennant should be sold at all. He was brilliant at the end of last season and up until he got injured this year. I thought he was a definite for one of the early England squads this season. He is more than worth a place in our squad

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,315 ✭✭✭Jazzy

but Dunphy doesnt rate him so therefore hes crap, like Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Ivan Cordoba... all quite clearly crap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

Pennant won't be sold. It would be retarted to sell him as he is more than good enough cover for if and when we do add quality on the wing.

Bit harsh imo. Could probably get more for Kuyt to a dutch club. Lets not forget his incredible record there. Sur Kezman came to england, was a flop and made a profit when sold on because of his past record.

Voronin 1.5million?! Have you seen the prices for other players? 6 for Chopra like.

And Pennant for 3.5 when Richardson was over 5. IMO He's definately shown enough in both his time with Liverpool and before that he'd be very valuable for a second tier club. Even as backup to a better winger at Pool i'd be very happy to keep him!

Riise would probably be about that price alright, maybe 4ish.

Some rumours of Alonso considering his position in the summer. There was no substance to it from what I could tell - no quotes - nothing other than a suggestion Barca was interested but he wouldn't consider anything till the end of the season. Also stuff being thrown in about his wife having a baby and wanting to raise it in Spain - again I think its tabloid talk.

However I think it raises something valid about whether he'll stay this summer. Probably all depends on the remainder of the season but he won't want to settle for being a second choice regardless of who its to. Won't do his international career any good. Raises the prospect of a 15 to 20 m sale or possibly a player exchange (I'd accept Messi and Etoo). I don't want to see him go but I could easily see it happening.

All in all no matter who gets sold the one thing that has to be done is to get in two top class centre backs and a little more cover on the wings. Couldn't see a massive clear-out though.

Barça already have Xavi, who's a far superior player to Alonso. They've also got Toure Yaya, Deco and the unbelievable Iniesta to play in central midfield. Tbh, he'd probably have less chance of first team football at Barça than he does at Liverpool and there's no way Barça would be willing to spend that kind of money on an area where they've already go 2 of the best players in world football. A new centre-half should be their main concern in the summer, along with finding a replacement for Ronaldinho (although I think Henry could fill that role brilliantly).

Anyway, I think Alonso will leave in the summer for Spain but it wont be for either Barça or Real. I could see him joining someone like Villarreal, Atletico and possibly Valencia or Sevilla.

Carragher, Hypia, Agger, Skrtel and you want two more?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,337 ✭✭✭✭monkey9

Feb 22 2008 by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

INJURY-JINXED Daniel Agger has been given the go-ahead to resume his Liverpool career.

But the centre-back will be eased back into the first-team fray by Rafael Benitez after missing the last five months with a broken metatarsal.

Agger was told he can make his long-awaited comeback after visiting a specialist in Denmark yesterday.

The 23-year-old has been training in a pair of specially-modified boots and was close to making a return last month before suffering a setback.

Now his injury nightmare appears to finally be at an end, although Agger is unlikely to be thrown straight into the team despite Liverpool facing a centre-back crisis tomorrow.

With Jamie Carragher serving a one-match suspension, Martin Skrtel almost certainly still out and Jack Hobbs on loan at Scunthorpe United, Sami Hyypia is the only other senior centre-back available to Benitez for the Premier League visit of Middlesbrough.

Skrtel has missed the last two games after picking up a calf injury during training last week, and isn’t expected to regain full fitness in time for tomorrow’s game.

“The treatment has been going well,” said the Slovakian international yesterday.

“It has got better and better. The prognosis was that I should be back in up to 10 days and this is the ninth one.”

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso will decide on his Anfield future at the end of the season.

The Spain midfielder became a regular in the Liverpool team on his arrival from Real Sociedad as one of Benitez’s first signings in August 2004.

However, this season Alonso has suffered from a metatarsal injury and a loss of form, and has seen both Javier Mascherano and Lucas Leiva move ahead of him in the central midfield pecking order.

Alonso, who has started just 13 games this campaign, was an unused substitute for the Champions League triumph over Inter Milan on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old signed a new five-year deal in the summer but has long been courted by Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Former Liverpool youngster Besian Idrizaj has been released from hospital in Austria after collapsing while playing for new club FC Wacker Innsbruck on Saturday.

The 20-year-old fell to the floor 14 minutes after coming on as substitute in his team’s game against Sturm Graz.

Extensive heart and brain tests showed no obvious problem and Idrizaj, who never played for the Liverpool first team but scored a hat-trick in the friendly win at Wrexham in July, has been allowed to return home.

The striker left Anfield for his homeland on transfer deadline day last month after loan spells at Luton Town and Crystal Palace earlier this season.

    From Reuters

ROME, Feb 22 (Reuters) - England manager Fabio Capello has warned Liverpool not to think they have sewn up qualification for the Champions League quarter-finals after beating Inter Milan 2-0 at home on Tuesday.

"Liverpool must be very careful at the San Siro," he said in an interview in Friday's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport. The English Premier League side face the Italians in the return leg on March 11.

"Inter are really strong at home. Even at Anfield they defended with order after (defender Marco) Materazzi's sending off, conceding only a couple of chances.

"They can reverse the result, although it shouldn't be forgotten that Liverpool haven't reached two finals in three years by chance."

Capello also said his former club AC Milan still had a lot of work to do to ensure qualification on March 4 after Wednesday's goalless draw with Arsenal in London.

"Milan must be just as careful as Liverpool," he said. "Arsenal are capable of important feats, they find spaces and they strike at speed.

"But Milan did not slip up at the Emirates Stadium even under maximum pressure. It is the Milan team of the Champions League."

Janymac Cap, you have a lot to say about this tie! I think Alonso will go which would be a pity but at 26 he won't be willing to warm benches often.

    Mike.

The only way I would be even slightly happy to let Alonso go would be if Mascherano is finally signed and we get a world class winger be it right sided or left.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭prendy

i still think we NEED alonso...just as much as masc because he offers so much to the team whn he's there. masc doesnt have the passing abillity to cut open teams which you need in the centre.

id be gutted if alonso left.

I'm really really glad you are not the manager. We have the second best defensive record in the league both in games lost and goals conceded and you want to bring in two top class center backs?!?

Its plain to see that its the attacking players that need to be improved upon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,608 ✭✭✭Spud83

I'm guessing stick-dan meant two world class wingers and a little more cover at centre back and he got confused.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,337 ✭✭✭✭monkey9

Yeah, we could certainly do with another centre back just in terms of Hyypia probably leaving soon, but only cover. Carragher, Agger and Skrtel are all quality...well from what i've seen of Skrtel so far he looks quality.
A left winger is more important though. We have decent options on the right in Benayoun, Pennant and even Gerrard, but i'm sure Kewell is on his way out. Riise may be as well and he hasn't been playing well anyway.

Every home match Liverpool FC's official matchday programme ponders the question: 'What does a player's name say about their personality?'
It offers a quirky insight into life on and off the pitch with a whole host of random questions that inspire answers you won't find in your average football interview.

Here Steve Finnan reveals how he is confident the Reds will progress against Inter Milan, who the most entertaining character in the Reds' dressing room is, and why he's happy to be playing with Fernando Torres and not against him!

    S STAYING BEHIND

ALTHOUGH YOU'VE NOW RETIRED FROM INTERNATIONAL DUTY, IRELAND JOINED SCOTLAND, ENGLAND, NORTHERN IRELAND AND WALES IN MISSING OUT ON THIS SUMMER'S EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. WILL YOU STILL WATCH IT ON THE TV?

I don't know. I'll probably be on holiday when it all kicks off so I won't be watching every kick from every game but I'll keep at least one eye on how it's going and I'll watch the big games when they come along. But I won't be going out of my way to watch everything. I'm getting used to missing out - that's three big competitions in a row - and I've always survived in the past. I'm sure I will again.

    T TALKING TACTICS
YOU'VE BEEN ROTATED MORE THIS SEASON THAN PERHAPS AT ANY OTHER TIME IN YOUR LIVERPOOL CAREER, HOW DO YOU FIND IT?

Every player wants to play. There's no great secret there, but when your season lasts for, like, 65 or 70 games there's no way that you can play 90 minutes in them all. I understand that, but it's not just me that has to get used to it because it's something every big club does to their players. You want everyone fresh and at their best so the boss has got to pick and choose when you play.

HOW HIGHLY DO YOU RATE Alvaro Arbeloa?

He's a very good defender and very, very versatile. He's good going forward and good positionally too. I don't think he's got too many weaknesses. Having him here is good for me, because I know that I'm going to have to be consistent to play in the team. You want a bit of competition for places, because it maybe brings that extra couple of per cent out in your performance. The manager has tried to bring in competition for me since he's been here; Josemi and Jan Kromkamp both came here from Spain. Alvaro's going to be here for a lot longer than those two were and he'll be an important player for us, I'm sure of that. He's a nice lad, quiet but totally dedicated. He's played maybe in more positions than anyone else apart from Stevie this year and every club needs players like him who do their job wherever they play.

    E END OF SEASON
THERE ARE THREE MONTHS OF THIS CAMPAIGN LEFT UNTIL THE PRIZES ARE DISHED OUT, WHERE CAN A CONSISTENT RUN OF RESULTS FOR THE TEAM TAKE YOU?

Anywhere. We've slipped down a bit from where we would want to be, but we are capable of going on a long run of wins that, hopefully, will put pressure on the teams ahead of us. We don't look too far ahead of ourselves here at Anfield, and the most important game for us between now and May is the next one. When you've got the experience in the team that we have then you don't pay attention to anything being said or written outside the club. We've got a very talented group of players, a great support and a manager who gets the best out of us. We'll battle for every point for the rest of the campaign and see where that takes us, but we all want success this season.

    V VICTORY IN EUROPE
HOW HIGH ON YOUR LIST OF PRIORITIES DOES AVENGING LAST MAY'S DEFEAT TO MILAN RANK?

It would be nice to go to Moscow for the European Cup final again, but it's about the occasion and being successful rather than some desire to get revenge on Milan. It was one of those games where we just didn't really do ourselves justice. On another day, with a bit of luck we would have won that game. Milan weren't a better side than us, I don't think. We've still got a tough second-leg assignment against Inter who are still going great in Serie A at the moment. They've won it twice in a row and look good for a third right now. They've even been able to let Adriano go back to Brazil on loan. They'll be tough, all Italian teams are and we'll have to be at top level to get through. But we are confident in our own ability and we believe we'll get through.

    E ENTERTAINERS
WHO'S THE MAN WHO KEEPS THE DRESSING ROOM ENTERTAINED?

I'm not going to buck the trend; everyone else has said Jermaine Pennant and I'll have to agree with them. He's a great guy, but he's just a little bit nuts. Sometimes you're laughing at him, other times you're laughing with him. But when he's around you're guaranteed to be laughing one way or the other.

    F FOOTBALL IDOLS
    WHO WERE YOURS GROWING UP?

I was a Wimbledon fan growing up so I didn't really have an idol at the time. My support of Wimbledon ended when they released me at 16. My earliest football memories are of the World Cup in Mexico in 1986 when Maradona was the star of the show. He didn't really relate to the position I played but he was the best player in the world at the time and someone I enjoyed seeing on the TV.

    I INJURIES
YOU'VE HAD A FEW LATELY, HOW FRUSTRATING DO YOU FIND BEING STUCK ON THE SIDELINES?

Very, is the answer. I had a problem in December which kept me out of the team for just about the entire month and that was frustrating as hell because I missed some really important games, like United at home. It was worse because it took a bit of time to diagnose what was wrong, exactly, but we got there and I'm glad to be back in the reckoning again. I'm not one of those guys who likes sitting watching from the stands.

    N NEXT TIME
IRELAND MISSED OUT ON THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, WHICH WAS YOUR LAST CHANCE OF PLAYING IN A MAJOR FINALS - HOW HARD WAS THAT TO TAKE?

We've missed the last few major championships now because we never made Euro 2004 or the last World Cup but it was tough to take because at one stage we looked like we'd given ourselves a real chance of getting out of the group. You put your heart and soul into qualifying and when it doesn't happen for you then it's a blow. But you just have to focus on your form at club level and that gets it behind you in the quickest time possible.

    N NANDO
Fernando Torres LOOKS LIKE THE REAL DEAL, AND HAS PROVED A HANDFUL FOR EVERY DEFENCE HE'S FACED SINCE HIS SUMMER TRANSFER. HOW GLAD ARE YOU THAT HE'S ON YOUR SIDE?

Watching the way he plays in matches? Very glad! Because he looks to use the space between the full-backs and central defenders, that's where he makes a lot of his runs to and it's a nightmare for markers. As a full-back you don't know whether to go with him or pass him on to someone else. He's the first striker we've had for a while who can make something out of nothing. You don't think there's anything on and suddenly he's scored. He's been a great acquisition and I still think he's settling in to English football. Which is good news for us because it means he's going to get better and better.

    A AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE
WHERE'S THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH YOU'D WANT TO LIVE?

I don't want to offend anyone, except Harry Kewell, so I was going to say Australia – but just to wind him up if there are any Aussies reading this. Honest. There are a lot of Aussie Reds out there, so looking out the window today I'd have to say the last place I'd want to live would be one of the Poles. I'd hate it if it was cold all the time. I just hope we don't have a North Pole supporters' club!

    N NICK-NAMES
Dirk Kuyt REVEALED IN THESE PAGES LAST YEAR THAT AN ADMISSION YOU WERE TIGHTENING UP IN TRAINING SAW YOU CHRISTENED 'STIFFLER.' ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THAT?

    No, not really!

HARRY KEWELL CALLED YOU JONNY JACKS. WHAT'S WRONG WITH FINN?

Nothing at all. That's still my nick-name despite what the rest of the lads might have to say, and that's what I'm known as around the club. The Stiffler one hasn't stuck, it gave the boys a laugh for five minutes then it was gone, and I don't know what 'H's' one for me is all about! I'm happy enough with Finn and that's what I'll always be. Hopefully, but here you can never say never.

This DIC Deal and stories about it are starting to remind me of a certain Football Association of Ireland and it's search for a manager.

How many "trusted sources" were there as regards that particular job?

Seriously, Liverpool Fans, you need to stop clinging to hope, and just believe a story when you see a press conference with dudes in headdresses telling you they are the new owners.

Not just any dudes in headresses, we don't want Osama Bin Laden or anything. :)

So rather than the obvious wingers, striker and centre back cover anyone have specific players in mind at this stage for summer acquisitions.

Plenty of talk about Ben Arfa and Benzema. What others. Think we could lure Robben?, Malouda from Chelsea?, Joaquin, David Silva, David Villa from Valenca? Who can we actually get. I'd like to see bids for Malouda, Joaquin and Villa personally. Not so sure on CB cover.

Gawfaw moment from Inter Malan president
"We have yet to play the second leg, which will be in the more favourable conditions at San Siro,” he said.

“If the crowd are as I expect them to be, it will be hard for Liverpool. I have trust. We have 90 minutes and we can score 15 goals if we want to.”

Massimo Moratti you "only" need three. ;)

    Mike.

Maybe they shoudl have just "wanted" the 5 in the first leg and they would'nt be in this position.

Why? Malouda has done nothing with Chelsea and I'm delighted they stuck in a bumper price above ours in the summer. Joaquin imo has never lived up to his potential and doubt that would change at the pool. No doubting the quality of Villa though.

I've always liked SWP. Also think that Lennon is a quality winger

Chelsea wouldn't sell you anyone worth having. Ben Afra is a possiblity, but seems a bit headless at the moment, Benzema will move to Barca/Real if anyone. Robben won't go back to England. Villa possibly, but it would be an all eggs in one basket, there's a good few clubs after him.

Realistically, Liverpool could be very limited in who they get, getting into 4th place or winning the cl is essential, or they could be big problems. If Man City got a foot on 4th, I wouldn't see them giving it up easy with Shinawatra behind them, and a good manager in Eriksson.

Agree. Ive said it so many times before. I'll believe it when its reported on the official Liverpool site. Pretty much every week there is a story about how the club has been sold. Even back in December there were stories saying the deal was done for 500m.

Depends on what European competition you are in tbh.

No CL = No decent players will be interested in joining you.
