Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. What are the odds that Dunphy and the lads proclaim Besiktas are 'the worst team they have seen in the Champions League'. It gets rolled out every time there is a walkover.
    Can you remember a worse one?

    The ref puts the Turks out thier misery, no extra time.

    Dunphy will not feel he has to backtrack on anything as the opposition were so rank, you watch.

    Mike.

    hahahaaha what a result.

    Isn't this goal difference actually important? Now it means if you win your next two games you'll defo go through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,243 ✭✭✭✭Jesus Wept

    Always pisses me off when a ref blows it up early, finish it out, it's not a boxing match ffs.

    Hopefully this gives Babel a confidence boost.

    I still can't get my head around why Crouch has been all but frozen out by Rafa lately.

    just over a second of extra time per goal, lol

    Terrible Besiktas performance. I'm not gonna say our performance was incredible, it's what we should play like all the time.

    Another CL record broke though :D

    Nope..... lol, but the boys will love rolling out the old cliche's..... I think we still deserve a bit of respect by breaking the record score.... its not as if they score themselves.... well apart from Babels 2nd..... I think my point is made.... :p

    Oh man if Babel had got that header, hat trick in 20 mins.. Heh heh.
    Strikers for Fulham, Kuyt and Torres, thats who will be picked, I think Torres and Crouch should.

    Yossi's goals were an illusion according to dunphy. LOL this is great!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,692 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

    Well, I think Yossi has earned his place on the right. Pennant better buck up when he comes back or he could be looking at a lot of bench time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,067 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

    Fantastic performance. Besiktas were woeful, really bad but we were great. So hard to pick a MOM.

    Mascherano, Benayoun, Crouch, Arbeloa, Gerrard & Voronin were all excellent. Kewell & Babel also looked great when they came on. Loved the Babel flick. Goal of the night ? Its hard to pick between the Babel flick, Gerrards goal or Benayouns volley.

    Hope to see Benayoun start on the right & Crouch up front with Babel (or Torres if fit) at the weekend.

    Benayoun is my man of the match. he worked very well tonight.

    well we are against marseilles now really, those goals tonight could make all the difference. Porto know now if they beat besiktas they are through no matter what. If they had lost we could have afforded to draw last game and still go through if we won the next.

    Still it is almost in our hands, 2 wins and it is very unlikely we won't go through. My understanding is that is is pure goal difference nowadays rather than results between the 2 teams?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,067 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

    Besiktas fan before the game.
    "For me, it would not be a surprise if we triumph at Anfield. This Liverpool side is vulnerable and not the super team of previous seasons.

    "Now they suffer many problems in defence and concede many goals in matches.

    It hasnt...It goes something like this.

    1) Goal dif between the two tied teams
    2) Away goals scored
    3) Total goal dif

    etc etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

    Pity Babel hit the woodwork, it would have been the fastest hat-trick in CL history I think.

    Is Voronin the thinking players Dirt Kuyt? On the face of it they are pretty much the same type but tonight the Ukrianian was far more effective than the Dutchman would have been I think. He looked up and looked quick all evening, setting up two goals (Bennys first and Gerrards) it would have been nice if he'd picked up one himself.

    Mike.

    Great performance from Liverpool, will Rafa keep faith in this team at the weekend now?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭el rabitos

    riise did himself no favours. got some well deserved boos there towards the end. gloryhound.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭shotamoose

    Was really hoping Voronin would get one as he played well, lots of clever passes and his flick for Gerrard's goal was sublime. Benny and Crouch were great too, interesting to see Babel doing well in his favoured centre forward role also. Hope Harry can keep up the form and he might actually take over on the left wing. LOL at Rafa making 'keep it tight at the back lads' gestures when they scored the 7th goal.

    apologies, but either way we lost 1-0 to marseille, so if we beat them we can't lose on any of the comparisons up to overall goal diff

    If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group
    matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:
    a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the
    teams in question;

    b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams
    in question;
    c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches
    played among the teams in question;
    d) superior goal difference from all group matches played;
    e) higher number of goals scored;
    f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question,
    as well as its association, over the previous five seasons (see paragraph

    No in this scenario Liverpool would have to beat Porto and then they would have to go to Marseille and win by two goals to be 100% sure of qualifying. Or 2-1 3-2 etc would see them go through on away goals.

    If they won 1-0 it would come down to overall group goal difference .

    My own optimistic prediction was for Liverpool to win their last three matches and Marseille to only pick up one point in their last three, that being Besiktas away.

    So its still panning out like this above all those goals mean we are fairly safe with just a single goal victory versus Marseille.
