going into second year....never joined any societies last year....is is too late to sign up next year? what societies are the best for meeting new people and getting involved....?

Not by any means. Gamesoc is extremely fun, there are more consistent plugs plugs elsewhere on the forum.

you can join any society at any time -- freshers week is just the time when they come together at one place
