Why the on/off swelling with wisdom teeth?

One of my upper wisdom teeth is breaking through (it's about half way erupted i'd guess), and i'm going to see my dentist next week to have it checked out. It's not sore, but it seems to swell up for a day or two, and then the swelling goes for a few days...and then returns. Why does this happen? It's really irritating…
