so, I want to put a gps application on my mobile and have been digging around for some reliable info.A few question if anyone can help. 1) is navteq the best for irish maps? 2) is there an update for navteq or whichever is the best sw coming out soon and should i wait for it. 3)does the gps application need to open a 3G connection to operate(have a prepay phone and 3G sucks up da credit). 4)should i get an authentic gps receiver from nokia or get a cheapo on ebay. would really appreciate any guidance.this is also posted on the gps forum just in case theres 2 lunatics out there. thanks

Bluetooth GPS from Ebay. I got one and it's spot on though I just use my N95 gps now.

    1) apparently navteq is the business
    2) dunno, and would like to know myself if it's possible to update maps for route 66 mobile 7
    3) no, but data connection may be used if you subscribe to extras like traffic reports, etc, although in Ireland you could just take it everywhere is congested so no need.
    4) go for a minimum SIRF 2 bluetooth receiver. more channels the better

Summary: you are looking for route 66 for symbian

    1) Navteq have 100% of Ireland covered
    2) Maps are provided by the software supplier, not Navteq themselves, latest maps I have seen is with Navigon which were released March 2007
    3) No, though some can use GPRS for traffic info (not Ireland though)
    4) Any bluetooth receiver should do, buy try and get one that uses the SiRFstar III chipset

    Hope that helps

Edit: see nazoil posted as I was typing this in :-)

I am already using TomTom Navigator 6 with version 675 maps for UK + IE and I rate it highly.

I've also got all the funny voices and current speed camera database and congestion charge zones.

I use a Bluetooth GPS receiver I got from ebay and it works extremely well and the battery lasts FOREVER!!!!!! (not literally, of course but it does feel like it)

It was a doddle to install and working within 5 minutes of starting.

I have two Navman iCN units, two Navman F20 units and two Tomtom units and the phone works just as well as all of them.

If anybody wants a recommendation then I am it. My business is GPS related and I've used many different systems.

get the latest route 66.. i have it and the coverage is excellent.. only a few new roads not covered i.e. Gory bypass and Ennis bypass.. but for small road coverage i doubt it could be beaten..
