    Hey,

I am looking for advice. I am looking to get a blue great dane dam. I have been keeping an eye on buyandsell and donedeal.ie which have a few for sale but at a hefty €1000+. I saw an add on buy and sell offering dane pups for adoption in Carlow, Leinster. I am a bit weary now of buying the pup from this person as they say they have moved to plymouth in England. Notice how I misspell Carlow as Calow and he repeats this misspelling twice. I have had the following correspondence.

    Hi,

I saw your add on buy and sell. Do you
    have
    any
    danes available?

    My number is 087XXXXXXX

    Many Thanks

    Joe

thanks for the quick reply. I tried to call
    once
or twice but there was no answer. I phoned

after a female blue dane, I would love to see a
photo if you have one? What age is she?
    Cheers,

evening ok I have attached the pictures of the female
dane to the mail. She is called Mimmi Please i'm online, get back to me

    Joe wrote: Oh wow
she is beautiful. I would love to adopt her,
I have a house with a big garden close to the
Beach and big walks. She would have constant company
With my two, spoilt golden retriever females. One is
1 year old and the other is 12 years old. There is
Always people in the house and I have tons of nieces
And nephews that are constantly over. Where are
    You based?

    Hello,
One of your retrievers has come of age. How
    is
    she?
I reside in plymouth,England and you?

    Joe wrote: Hey,

Yes Saoirse (Seer-sha) is the older dog, she has
Been spoilt through her life and fed very well so she
Looks and acts like she is 7 or so. The younger dog
Brought a new lease of life to her and they spend most
Of the day running around together.
I live in Dublin, Ireland. I understood from
Your add in buy and sell that you, or the dogs were in
Calow in Leinster which is quite close to me. Is Mimmi
    In England or Ireland?

Yes, i wife lives in Calow with the puppies but
    she

    We
are expecting a baby and you know she can not be
    there alone
If you wish, we can send the puppy(Mimmi) to
    you
    Just get back to me

    Joe wrote Hi,

I am not going to proceed with this as I do not want
to pay out money before I recieve the dog. She is
beautiful but I am weary of going into a transaction
over the internet. If she was in Ireland I would love
to adopt her. Best of luck with it, I hope I can find
a dame as nice as her.

Joe - By the way, its Carlow not Calow.

I'm still at work, why don't you come over to Plymouth this weekend
L:et's do it this way, i will take the puppy to the shipping company that will ship her and they will contact you

Naahh ..wouldn't give any money in advance either.

300 stg is too cheap for a great Dane anyway.

BTW ...why the euphymism "adoption fee" ?? It's the sales price, isn't it?

Oh my god, am I correct in saying they wanted to *post* you the dog without asking so much as your living conditions etc?

BTW I saw a blue great dane in Dun Laoghaire at the weekend, such a gorgeous animal!

I don't know the breed so I looked up a pic:

If blue great danes are so valuable, I'm sure they'll have no problem giving her away in Plymouth. OP, it sounds like a scam I'm afraid. :(

Yeah I replied to say that I was going to find one in Ireland and not go for that one.

They are beautiful though arent they?

Yes, but their beauty comes at a price:
Serious health problems. Great Danes are not a healthy breed. Their bone structure is often flimsy and may break down under the heavy weight thrust upon it. They are frequently stricken at an early age by joint and bone disorders, heart disease and cancer. Their life span is extremely short.

Deffo dodgy avoid like the plague.

Great Danes do come into rescue sometimes perhaps contact a few rescues and say that you are interested in adopting a blue should they ever come into rescue. Although you could be waiting a long while but you never know.

    Hi Joe

Sorry - it defo sounds like a scam. And yes, Great Danes are prone to health problems and should only be purchased from a reliable breeder who has proof of health checks on it's parents (hip scoring, knee testing, etc). For further info on the breed, faults and characteristics, you can order Fido Fact (an in depth article on a specific breed) from http://www.dogstodaymagazine.co.uk/ . That way when you contact breeders you know what questions to ask.

I know most vets won't be able to check for problems with your dog until 6 months, but if it's a reliable breeder, you should be able to get it in the contract that if there are any genetic faults with the dog, they will either refund part of the money or take the dog back and refund you. It would be heart breaking if you shelled out 1,000 + on the dog, only to find it had a hip fault, and surgery would cost thousands. You'll probably have to go to England to find your dog. Find breeders at http://www.breedersonline.co.uk/dog-breeders.asp (search under great dane). Ring the breeders, and see if you can arrange a day or two to go over and to meet them and see the kennels. If you find one you are happy with, then you can reserve a pup. Best of luck! ;)

Do they still use £'s in carlow - tell him you'll give him 150 euro. And post some monopoly money over. - Possibly a rspca report mightn't go amiss here either.

There's someone in Fermoy in co. Cork running a Great Dane rescue centre, I'll find out more if your interested. I think they're looking for good homes for some of them. P.m. if you want to.
