My niece just got her results yesterday. She got 320pts which should be enough to get an offer however...... she got a D1 in Higher Maths but the entry requiremnts call for a minimum of C3.

Is there any possibility that given she well exceeded last years points requirements but has just barely slipped under the Maths requirement that she might receive an offer. She also go a C2 in ordinary level Physics - in case that's of any benefit.

Any advice would be greatly appreiciad as this is a stressful time for all.

    Roy

Don't think so to be honest, if you get a D1 and there's a C3 requirement thats it, you don't qualify.

    Two Options really:

    1) If she has enough points she can repeat Maths the following year and re-apply through CAO. The points obtained by re-sitting the maths exam won't count but provided she obtains the C3 minimum and has the points from this year she will be accepted the following year in DCU.

    2) If she doesn't have the points will have to repeat the whole leaving cert again and make sure she doesn't make the same mistake twice.

Tell her to get it re-checked might get brought up a grade. Or could be dropped down. But its worth the risk.

This might be helpful; taken from another thread concerning Maths failure.

i applied for engineering in dcu 2 years ago. failed maths, thought, ah §hit... no engineering. the day of the cao offers, i got a letter from DCU saying that "we know you failed maths, but if you're still interested in engineering we can do an interview bla bla bla" or something along those lines.

Get her to ring up DCU and ask about the interview

Does she have anywhere else down on her CAO for engineering?
NUIM has an exam you can do if you didnt get the C3 in maths

ring dcu and ask for the department head and ask for an interview

there are always a small number of places available for case like this(they deny it but there is)

any siblings already in college on similar courses or other family members

That said I did Physics in DCU and the engineers and physics students share the same maths course until fourth year and the maths is tough. First year is like H Leaving leaving cert but more rigorous. Second year is really bad horrible stuff and third is ok.

Plus the maths impacts load of other subjects a lot of theory can/is maths based so maths becomes a tool for learning/understanding other subjects

no they don't.. It's called open opportunities...

Simply put, DCU is really struggling to fill engineering and other courses, if you had it down on the CAO, hoping to get the honours maths and you missed it, they will probably contact you and invite you to apply through open opportunities. In general, if you aren't invited, then you're not in but ringing and inquiring can't really do any damage...

she wont get an offer from the cao

but go to the website then navigate to the engineering faculty and read up on the open opportunities for engineering course
