I'm with NTL in Dublin and I found a few websites that are not working for me.
First I thought it was the website but this goes on for 1 week now and I know other people can access it.

I don't know if this is a problem with NTL or something on my side.
Altough I tested it with several different machines.

So could you try to open the followin sites and let me know if they work and what provider you are using and your location.
Then I have some info to contact NTL or find the problem at my end.
    Thanks in advance!

    or

    or

I have problems with some/most images on imageshack but can open www.imageshack.us.
    But can't open ca.geocities.com or www.geocities.com

    can you ping them ?

Maybe someone can make a sticky on common faults if you can't access a website, it usually involves an ISP's dodgy DNS records.

I can ping them (by name) but can't access the actual sites. In Firefox, I get 'The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.' I'm with NTL in north Dublin.

Time for another support request methinks.

Im on NTL here aswell and i cant open any of them sites...

As stated elsewhere on this forum earlier NTL have been having DNS problems
and every now and again some sites get nuked.....

I know people have reported it in the past and have gotten nowhere......
And with the way their customer service is now id say u have no chance with them...

    You could try www.opendns.com

Im not at home at the moment so i cant check if they will load through that...

    Cheers

    Misty

    Thanks for all the replies.

It looks like an NTL routing problem.
I can ping ca.geocities.com so it doesn't look like a DNS problem.

I get the message in Safari
Safari can’t open the page “http://ca.geocities.com/” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection, which sometimes occurs when the server is busy. You might be able to open the page later.

Time for a call to NTL :(

Is NTL loading webpages really slow for anyone else??

Wrong. If you can ping, it aint a routing problem. pings have to route there as well no? You are right in that it is not a DNS either as you can ping the host name.

Probably MTU size. They have done something up along upstream which has added an extra layer of encapsultion and may have pushed the MTU size over a size that some sites wont handle.

For the craic, download dr tcp from here http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp and change your MTU down to say 1400 on what ever netwrok interface you are connecting to the web on. I think you will have to reboot afterwards? Cant remember.

I have seen the above happen on my own WISP where on one leg we are "renting" a layer 2 pipe from another provider through a vds tunnel. Due to the encapsultion of VDS if pushed our packet size up. We just had to play around with IP table to mangle the syn. But that is neither here nor there....

Try the MTU bit above and see how you get on.

    I'm on o2 Broadband and I can't get into www.allofmp3.com
I heard that limewire and other sites that would result in a lot of traffic are barred also

I can understand MTU size when talking about VPN, because the traffic can get bigger then normal MTU size allows when using VPN.
But we are talking about HTTP traffic here.
I use a VPN connection to work and a different VPN connection to a customer location. Both are working fine so then I really would like to know what MTU to use when my VPN connection work but I can't open certain websites.

Anyway I changed the MTU from 1500 to 1400 to 1200 to 1000 and the result = still the site doesn't load.

I also checked my router (Belkin) but I can't change MTU on that thing. Neither can I change anything on the modem.

Also I find it very funny that only NTL users have this problem. Most of them will use the standard MTU in Windows and if that doesn't work with NTL it is an issue that NTL needs to fix. Not the end-user.

I send an e-mail this morning to NTL support waiting for a reply.

You can't access the Bellagio website either (hotel in Las Vegas) on NTL :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

http://www.bellagio.com/ works for me on NTL. If it doesn't, follow these instructions to use opendns dns servers. That is not the same problem which is being talked about here.

That's an NTL DNS issue. I spoke with one of the support guys a few weeks back who said he was passing it to networks to be fixed.

They're an odd company, so many wierd faults.
