the large black common house spiders you see running around your house are 99% of the time smaller males... me and my girlfriend were having a few drinks during the summer watching a film and she let a roar pointing..

went to investigate behind the 2 seater and there was a adult female house spider..

now when ya see the males and you think there big, you shoudve seen this,

still have her i put her in a plastic reptile box, will get pics up in the morning when i get home... shes nearly the size of my hand biggest wild spider iv ever seen in ireland..

its fangs are huge, people saying irish spiders cant hurt, if this bite you yad no all about it!!!!

Only been bitten once - but it the skin was not broken - just felt like a tiny pinch.

To be honest not something I worry about here - actually it is one of the reasons I am so fond of staying in Ireland. I mean just think about Australia or the US?
Normally I just catch and release with a glass and some card but when I have to I will use my hands to cup.

So in all that time - one little pinch I think means nothing at all to worry about :)
(unless some git gets in on a shipment of banana's).

A greenish coloured spider bit me about 10 years ago when I tried to get it out of the kitchen sink.

It was very sore, I've never seen a spider like it since.

This is true, you rarely see the females either, because the males are doing all the sprinting round looking for a mate. Saw one of these females last year, hanging out on a curtain in my parents' house. It was at least six inches leg span (body not too much bigger than a male house spider). The cat eventually caught it, cornered it and then got scared of it. My mother said it had lost a few legs and was getting agressive, so she smacked it with her shoe.

Just though I would post a pic of my "pet" spider.

So what type? Trapped in Pint Glass BTW.

I got bitten by one of those this time last year!

I saw it in the step in porch outside my front door. And I thought, sure, he's outside, I don't mind. I was never frightened of one before but he/she was a monster! So I left it.

A few days later watching tv, I saw it above the tv in the corner of the room! Now this is next to the front door, so my brother coulda left the door open and what not, so I left him, again.

It wasn't doing any harm was it? I never ACTUALLY saw it move. Next day, going inside, something catches my eye high up on the wall above the front door...... THE SPIDER!

Again I leave it. Watching tv later that night he's in the corner AGAIN! So I think to myself, right, had enough, he's going outside. So, (being kinda tiny) I got myself a chair to stand on and some tissue to catch him gently and leave him outstide, with me right? Good intentions and all that.

So, I go to catch him and he scuttles away behind the tv unit and i can't reach or see him, so I leave it.

Next night, I see him in the same corner, taunting me at this stage, so I got to catch him, same way, and i catch him by the leg! Yay me!

BUT! The thing went limp, and I think, I DID NOT JUST KILL A SPIDER BY CATCHING IT BY THE LEG! Nope, the little bugger suddenly flipped over, and bit into my wrist! I dropped him in pain/shock/anger and he runs away never to be seen again.

However, not being the end of it, my whole hand and wrist went red and white blotchy and numb. For 6 hours!

Moral of the story, set your phasers to stun and shoot to kill.

I worked in Toyota for years and was workin under brand new car and seen load of spider eggs under the wheel arch then when I went to kill the sack a brown spider came out to guard them I caught her and brought her to my mate who knows spiders inside has loads of them turned out to be a brown widow spider which do bite and can be painfull ie tissue damage etc
The car was shipped from south Africa
So I'd say there are spiders from others countries here so I don't trust any of them

I'd say the moral of the story is don't try to pick 'em up by the leg! You wouldn't try to do it to a cat would ya!

    That's retarded.

In fairness, it's not as ridiculous as the "help me" chemical that was mentioned earlier in this thread.

I was never afraid of spiders, it's flies I absolutely hate, they're so dirty. My cat has killed a couple of spiders and I have even saved some from her claws!! But from now on they are going outside to live. Never knew Irish spiders would bite.

There's no reason to alter how you deal with them, it's very rare to be bitten by an Irish spider. I'd say you'd have to really make them feel threatened for that to happen.

Hey does anyone know if this spider is dangerous? I found it on the wall of my bedroom, my boyfriend captured it in a container and flushed it down the toilet. Then.... when he was having a shower the next day it came up out of the drain at him. I took a pic of it and emailed it on to pest control and the guy that got it was pretty freaked for someone who works with bugs all year round.Anyway he said he's never seen anything like it, and that he would send the pic of to be identified, until then i was advised to leave my house. YES people a spider evicted me!!!!!!

It was about the size of the palm of my hand and really hairy!!!!!!!     check out the attachment below to see it! Or if anyone has any idea what type of spider it is could they let me know please!!!!!!!!

That's exactly like the one I found on my bedroom wall (I live in Ireland) but the body was a little thicker, as if it had just fed.
Stayed downstairs that night and the next day it was gone :O searched the house completely. I tried finding it online but no luck so nobody believed me :(
My guess is that it lived in the attic long enough to get that big.

How did you get rid of it in the end?
