You'll be needing a lot more information than that to make a decision. Use the search function, you'll find recent Alfa 156 threads to read through.

    It's A-L-F-A - Alfa Romeo...

Sorry for being pedantic but the 'Alpha' mis-spelling thing has become rampant and needs to be stopped!!

Try to verify if it's been well maintained. If so it might be worth a punt. Really beautiful car - always fancied one...

Volvoboy, hate browsing carzone and seeing ads like yours, very little chance selling it like that anyway. people looking for Almeras are the only people that will see the ad.

Check the service history. They can be fierce unreliable.

I saw it cos of the link in your signature. Recycling of ads would actually put me off buying a car, suggests small time trader.

I've no doubt about that, but it's the impression I get when i see recycled ads on carzone.

how cheap is it. I priced one with leather in the trade lately and was offered €2,500, they make a little more than that at auction. The waranty is worth a lot though.

6500. proabaly less as i'm payin cash.
For me the warrenty is the clincher. I read the another Alfa thread and its made my mind up.
    Im goin for it

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    €6,500 that's far too much

  • Registered Users Posts: 51,244 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

€6500 is way too much for an almost 7 year old 156. Should be paying well under €5k for one at this stage.

Regarding whether or not to buy one? Well on this forum your stirring a hornet's nest with that question.

When buying one just make sure it has a full service history including when the timing belt was last changed. The belt should be changed every 36k miles. The front suspension is also a known weak spot on them so have it examined for premature wear. Other things to check regularly include the oil level as the T-Spark engine likes to use a bit of oil. Also check when the spark plugs were last changed as they are a bit expensive so use it as a bargining tool with the seller.

Also stay well clear of Alfa Romeo dealers as they generally tend to be useless. If your living in the Dublin area then the Alfa specialist who is highly recommended is Gerry Cambell from TI Autos.

Can the last 2 paragraphs of the above post be made an automatic answer to every Alfa query, and then close all AR topics. There is nothing else to say that's worth saying.

Still, we'll get a certain 3 members come along & rant about Alfas & turn this into a 7 page thread.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,919 ✭✭✭GavMan

    Thanks all.
I agree that the price is big, but i wont pay him that much. Plus, i dont mind paying a bit extra as it has a years warrenty, which means alot to me

Be sure to exactly quantify what the warranty covers. Some warranties can be quite limited. I would be asking if the engine, cooling system, electrics (including things like elec windows & central locking failures), gearbox failure, suspension failure, etc. was covered.
That will tell how much the warranty is worth.

    Good thinkin batman.
    Cheers for that

You would be mad to pay that money for it.
You can get a 156 with lets say 50 k miles from a dealer for less than 6k and thas a 2003 , never mind the warranty, whoever gives that probably will only support it for gearbox and engine, if u keep a close eye on the timing belt and the oil you wont need it.
Dont buy one from the fee ads paper, go threw the papers and popular websites.
I have had several alphas and and selling my mondeo to buy another. the one im looking at is a silver 03 52k full service history 2 owners for 6250, thats without a trade in ab=nd before I offer him cash, pm me if you need any advise, hate to see you pay that much for an alpha..........

  • Registered Users Posts: 51,244 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Folks, just for the record, it is Alfa Romeo not Alpha Romeo. :pac:

Indeed. Clear example of one of the reasons I tend to close re-surrected threads unless the new post is relevant (i.e. update from the OP, an answer to a question not yet answered, etc.). The value of the '01 156 is obviously a lot less now than it was when the OP started his thread. Readers / posters don't realise the time lapse when they post.
