I'm astounded that I've never noticed such a distinctive building before. Then again, I don't ever recall walking down Hawkins Street. I always associate it with that Department of Health and Children monstrosity.
Here's some info on the building. :)

Thanks for that europerson - most interesting, especially the reference to 'Leinster Market'. I've seen old pictures of Leinster Market which is always described as being 'off Westmoreland Street' but, for some reason, I always presumed it was on the other side. Presumably it has 'disappeared' with development over the years.

Leinster Market is a lane that's still there, in fact. It runs right through Trinity's buildings there. If you're on D'Olier Street, and look to the left of the Dublin Gas Company building (now TCD's School of Nursing and Midwifery), you'll see it. It opens out onto Hawkins Street behind, as you can see in the boss of me's photograph. Trinity has it gated now though, but the Council street name plates are still intact (at least on the D'Olier Street side).

It is also still listed in the OSI maps. Twas a great little lane and a short cut, but shut about 20-25 years ago iirc.

I had it in my head that it was off Westmoreland Street but I've just rechecked those old photographs, and I was obviously mistaken (hence my confusion).

    So it is! :o (6th edition, page 38, E2 (code 11)).

I don't believe it! I've spent half my life in the North King Street, Halston Street, Green Street and Ann Street North areas and never noticed that before. I even have about 50 pics of North King Street and I don't think it's on any! :o

    Well done Gavin!

Leinster Market - I didn't think this would work but it seems to have ! :)

I simply photographed the pic from a book. The book is dated 1972 and it refers to the pics being taken "90 years ago" so it must date from about the 1880s.

The caption reads "Leinster Market, behind D'Olier Street and a few of its inhabitants"

It's interesting to see that the interesting kinked path of the street was there back then too.

Apart from using Paint to edit my pics are there any other way to do so? I've tried using Paint but just keep making a balls of it. I have a pic that I want to upload but I need to get of the buildings beside it so what is the best way to do that? Cheers.
