Apologies for going off topic lads but the OSI and Dublin City Council seem to have a sloppy attitude to the renaming of Corporation Street.

In my copy of OSI 'Dublin City and District Street Guide' (4th Edition 2002) it is listed both ways.

On page 38 in the normal grid pages it is corrected listed as James Joyce Street. However in the 4 detailed pages of the city centre at the rear, it is listed as Corporation Street.

It gets even more confusing in the OSI Pocket Series 'Dublin City Centre Street Atlas' (3rd Edition 2005).

On grid 20, it is at the very top of the page and is listed as James Joyce Street. Go to grid 12 and it appears at the very bottom (overlap between grids) as Corporation Street.

At the Railway Street end of James Joyce Street, I am almost certain the Corporation Street nameplate still exists. It did the last time I passed as it caught my eye. If I'm passing again I'll get a pic.

Now after all that, in my opinion ,the former name was much better. The new name is pretentious, tacky and 'touristy'. :(

Apologies again for going off topic).

Is number one the flats off North Strand Rd. Dont know the name of em though, see them as you go over the bridge on the 25 into town from Coolock.?

  • Registered Users Posts: 78,411 ✭✭✭✭Victor

    1. Ballybough Bridge, along the Tolka, or just maybe at Ringsend Bridge on the Dodder.
    2. I'm guessing Sandwith Street railway bridge or possibly one of its neighbours.
    3. Barrow Street railway bridge.
    4. Docklands somewhere, possibly the old gas company site?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

Number 1 definitely looks like the flats in Ringsend.

Number 2 is around my area. Macken st?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭Slunk

Was thinking around Thorncastle strret too if it wasnt Ballybough.

Not Barrow street, down the road from it. Grand Canal Quay.

I'm guessing number 4 was taken from the same street on the junction of Pearse st.

Both names were on opposite sides of the street at the Talbot St end until recently-very sloppy indeed from the city council. I think the change from Corporation was a good idea as it still has strong associations with public housing and, by extension, with poverty.
Maybe Joyce should have a more significant street named after him but I think this one is absolutely appropriate in its own way. 100 years ago this was Montgomery St or 'The Monto', which was one of the world's largest and most famous red-light districts. The best known chapter of 'Portrait of the Artist' is set there.
After independence De Valera had the place razed to the ground at the behest of the Legion of Mary.
