Certificate of Good Character

In many continental European countries there is a certificate that is issued from the town hall showing that you are of good character and have not committed any criminal offences. Does such a certificate exist in Ireland and if so: 1/ What's the official name for it? 2/ Where do I obtain it? Thanks for any helpful replies.

In Ireland the Gardai call it a "Police Certificate of Character"

I recently got one, although they will only issue it for consulate uses or foreign adoption uses
