I've recently finished college and i've been offered 2 jobs-
    1)Mechanical Building Services Engineer
    or
    2)Project Managent

I've looked into the pro's and con's of both and there both pretty similar. As regards which job i'd prefere, im fairly easy going.

SO...My question, which one of these jobs would have greater potential?! Money starting of is fairly similar in both....

    Thanks
    Conor

Option 1 in my opinion is a dead end job.

The potential is in no 2.

    1)Mechanical Building Services Engineer
    or
    2)Project Managent

    That depends....

Is 1) a design role? working for a contractor? General HVAC?

    2) PM of what. TBH a PM with no actually work experience sounds very ropey to me. Is the role more site engineer?

    1) Is in the design role, consultancy, with general HVAC

    2) I would be trained in. Basically bolted onto a project manager on a new development thats recently only started until they deem safe for me to start workin on a few small projects of my own. EDIT- Yes the role would be more site manager

Either job i'd need to be trained in....

Any site manager/site engineer role is tough to start off with as Junior engineers get very little respect in the field. Everybody knows that they're wet behind the ears. If you've got thick skin, and don't mind crap working conditions - freezing portacabins and knee deep in mud in winter! But depending on the company, it can be very rewarding, especially if the firm is good.

Consulting engineer is the other side of the coin, so to speak. Office based, more theoretical, without the site experience.

Most engineers end up working both sides of the consulting/contracting fence at times in their career. I heard of some swapping to what they though they would love, and hating it and vice versa.

Are either company specialised in a partiular field?

It's really hard to advise what's "best" as what suits some doesn't suit others. FWIW I swapped after 10years consultancy, and am now in my 2nd year of working with a contracting frim, and I find it much more rewarding. But that's not to say I didn't like my old job, but i did want a change

Well the consultancy company focuses on energy efficiency- Houses Of Tommorrow, Passive buildings and also designs the M&E for Schools, Credit Unions, nothing to major.
    Its a VERY small company.

Wheras, the contracting company seem to be a much bigger company, the first project i'd be working on is a €200million developement of apartments/houses and shops....And i'd be on that site for at least 2 years(this is what im been told)
They have done alot of work with the luas development aswel, they seem fairly good and very well established.

I defo have a capable attitude for PM, and i'd like the design side to...Im just seriously confused, and i need to decide very soon which one im goin for

By the sounds of that, which company would you recommend?

I'd probably pick the smaller specialist firm, but that's just me!:D

Best of luck with YOUR choice;)
