I too am expressing my opinion and while I doubt the validity of your claim re the level of overheads I still say that if you are right this is not much comfort to the average customer whose bills are being driven up these high overheads caused directly by BMW's franchise policies.

And everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I certainly respect yours. But I would argue it's not exclusive to BMW, now is it? ;)

My local Citroen dealer charges time at three rates.
    Standard work €40
    Advanced work €44
    Technical work €49.

I don't have the exact details to hand of what work falls into what category but they are clearly on display OUTSIDE the garage.

ned78, just on your point about main dealers having to buy balancing equipment ect, surely these pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time, I'm not sure what main dealers are charging to balance your wheels nowadays but at 5 mins or less a wheel of labour I'm sure they must cover thier costs fairly easily. As for ordering special tools, don't BMW or Volvo or whoever Ireland provide any needed as part of the franchise deal? I always reasoned it out that dealers would say they charge more due to the level of expertise you get by bringing, for example your BMW, to people that specialise in BMW's and will have all the lastest tech info and training?

Had my 03 Passat serviced today at a main dealer - "long-life" service good for 20K bringing me up to 100K.

Labour of 3 hrs. incl. fitting new brake pads = €240. Add in cost of brake pads, air and fuel filter replacements, and the usual service tasks (oil change, coolant top-up, new oil filter, etc.) all came to the princely sum of just over €600 ! ....and that's before I get a CV joint replaced (he didn't have the part) and get my A/C system gassed ( his machine is out of order and generally on it's last legs he told me - so much for investing in equipment) !
