    Trying to pick a car:

Living in the city a car spends a lot of time in traffic.

Parking - How many times did you wish you had a smaller car like a Fabia or are you happy to have got a larger car and it doesnt make any real difference.

Soup - Is there an approx % diff in fuel consumption between 1.4 petrol and 1.9 Diesel?

I'll have a mad guess here but smaller car = easier parking and smaller engine = better fuel consumption :D (For petrol anyway)

As far as I can see, living in Dublin you don't really need a car... seeing that most Dublin people think that there is nothing outside of Dublin anyway :p

    But anyway:

    Octavia 1.9 (Tdi Diesel)

    ENGINE
    Cubic capacity 1896
    Cylinders 4
    Max Power (bhp/rpm) 110/4150
    Max Torque (lb ft/rpm) 173/1900
    Town mpg 41.5
    Out of Town mpg 65.7
    Average mpg 54.3
    Fuel Diesel

    Fabia 1.4 (Petrol)

    ENGINE
    Cubic capacity 1397
    Cylinders 4
    Max Power (bhp/rpm) 68/5000
    Max Torque (lb ft/rpm) 88/2500
    Town mpg 28.8
    Out of Town mpg 50.4
    Average mpg 39.2
    Fuel Unleaded

    Thnaks for that ......

Do you have stats for a 1.4 petrol Octavia?
How much is a Gallon of petrol these days?

1.4 Octavia: 75 bhp, 92 lb ft, and slower than walking.
It just has to be a diesel Octavia.

Dont bother with the 1.4 Octavia - diesel engine is a much better bet.

A gallon is 4.54 litres. A litre of diesel is around 110p at the moment, a litre of petrol around 115p. You do the sums :)

Eh, not to be too PC (!), that's 115c, not 115p. Or, clearer still, €1.15.

€1.10 for Diesel? That's expensive.. €1.05 round here

    Just to confirm something .....

    The 1.9 Diesel = Average mpg 54.3
    Petrol 1.4 = Average mpg 39.2

The bigger Diesel engine has a better MPG - is this correct?

To be honest if the car is spending most of it's life in city traffic you aren't going to get decent fuel ecomony. Just buy whichever you like the most. As for parking and big v's small they are both relatively small and the extra space in the Octavia may come in handy. On the flip side the road tax on a 1.4 is a lot less then the 1.9.
    Just to confirm something .....

    The 1.9 Diesel = Average mpg 54.3
    Petrol 1.4 = Average mpg 39.2

The bigger Diesel engine has a better MPG - is this correct?

Yes the new diesels give great MPG, but thats on long runs, around town it will drop a lot.

Yes that's correct a bigger diesel engines return much better mpg then petrol engines.

Are the TDis a lot more thirsty than the normal 1.9 Octavias?

The 1.9 we are taking about is a tdi, it is a very economical engine. The Octavia does not have a non turbo diesel engine.

There is no 1.9 petrol engine, afaik - which you asked about in your first post.

Consider that the diesel will be more to buy, insure and tax. So you'd have to work out if over your expected ownership of the car the saving in fuel is worth it. There are small diesels around like the 1.3 CDTi Astra/Corsa.

I own a petrol Fabia 1.4 16v, I use it for short city journeys mostly.

I do get about 9 miles per litre out of it.

On long journeys like Dub-Galway recently, the mpg on board was giving about 47MPG so alot better for long journeys than shorter ones like any car! :)

Thanks - Ive edit that now to read - 1.4 petrol or 1.9 Diesel

Like the man in orthopedic shoes - I stand corrected.

Where can I find this out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 748 ✭✭✭It BeeMee

    You can find it here

    1.4 - €292 pa
    1.9 - €511 pa

For mostly city driving, a 1.4 Octavia would work well, I'd say. It's biggest drawback is on the open road where you might need a bit of poke, but it will get you from A to B .....

Fabia is also available with a 1.2 engine. Same comments as the Octavia.

Fabia is a very odd name. Any idea where it came from?

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,281 ✭✭✭✭Esel

Check out both cars on http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm

Don't get a Fabia with the old 1.4 8-valve engine!
