law regarding post and customs

If one suspects that a parcel has been confiscated by customs, for whatever reason, are they legally required to inform you?

For example when customs determines you need to pay VAT on a parcel shipped from overseas, ordinarily one receives something through their letterbox to this effect.
However what if a parcel has been intercepted due to suspected prohibited items?
Does the recipient get informed of this in some manner?
What is the law? Can customs just disappear a parcel?

I'm not entirely sure. I suspect that if they have an item which they believe is illegal, then they are required to hold it and inform the Gardai. If after opening it, they determine that it's not illegal, then they send it on.
