Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi

I currently have 2Mbs eircom broadband with a 54Mbs wireless adapter for connectivity to my pc.

For the first couple of months the wireless adapter was connecting to my eircom router with the full 54 Mbs but lately the connection is continually showing 11Mbps (the signal strength is status excellent ). My friend has a similar setup and is showing the same speed of 11Mbps for connection to his eircom router.
I know this is not a big issue since I am still able to get the full 2Mbs from eircom (since 2 < 11 :-) )but I am curious what might cause this.

    Any ideas?

    cheers

ps some stats from the router
    Speed
    2048/256 (kbps)
    Line Attenuation
    21/12 dB

What's the brand of the router?
Does your friend have the same brand?
Is router set to default or have you been changing settings?

Have you connected any other wireless device lately.

The router may default to the fastest speed of a connected device.

Its not its about the speed of the wireless connection between the pc and the router nothing at all to do with the speed of the broadband connection.

It sounds to me like you are connecting in 802.11b mode. Check the wireless mode on the router and try to force it to G. I don't know how to do this on the netopia but it should be possible.

that was spot on Matrim.... many thanks

I checked the settings and the mode of operation was set to 802.11b+g so I changed it to 802.11 g only and I am now getting the full 54 Mbps.
    So problem solved

hand on heart I never changed that setting and it was working fine up to a few weeks ago. So i wonder if eircom rolled out some new settings to their active dsl modem/routers in the last month or so...?

Eircom cannot adjust the settings of your router.

is it possible you've changed the settings on the router to turn off boosted mode so its only using 11mb
what frequenct are you using? 802.11b?

if so. it should be 802.11g as that could be your problem.

Have you tried using another computer? what speeds does that achieve?

have you changed the settings on your network card?

Is you connection secure with WEP or MAC filtering also have you changed router password maybe a case of someone using your broadband and changing the settings. Also could be a uset with a 8.11b connection so make sure you have this set.

thats right it was... I forced the router to use g instead of g+b and that worked
Have you tried using another computer? what speeds does that achieve?
no... only checked a similar setup at my friends house but that was showing the same speed as well
have you changed the settings on your network card?
    nope

Forcing the router to use g seemed to do the trick so happy days

    thanks for the ideas
