XL-5 again or something else?

The XL-5 ESC in my Rustler crapped out. I've tried to negotiate a deal with Traxxas (it malfunctioned all by itself and is still very new) but have had no luck.

(Waiting for Coolwings to comment on online shopping now....:) )

Anyway, new XL-5 ESC's are readily available, but they cost in the order of $50-60. I was wondering whether anyone that went the brushless route could maybe spare their old one for me? Alternatively, is there something else in the same price region or cheaper available that would suffice? I've also been thinking about going BL myself, but that's big money, especially if you're talking LiPo. Maybe I should just get a BL ESC in the meantime...

    Any comments/advice would be appreciated.

    Brushless is good
    PROVIDING...!!
your trans. will hold up to it..
gears as well can get stripped quite easily.
Make sure you check out if it will take one first
    .
    Now fir the ESC.
what turn motor you planning on using?

I know, that's the problem with BL: new transmission, new driveshafts, new tires, not to mention all the broken parts as a result from crashes...:D

The more I think about it, the less of a real option it seems. A Mamba Max is like $185 shipped (+25% as well maybe), whereas the truck itself was about €160 new. I'm leaning towards just replacing the ESC.

The truck is pretty much standard - bar some RPM stuff - stock motor is 550 12 turn (equal to 540 15 turn I think).

Yes. but to be honest some of those 15 turn motors that come with the rtr models arent really that good
Better off get a decent 19 turn and esc to match

Get yourself a Novak XRS esc.
fantastic little unit and almost instant reverse. ;)
