we hear about caught by garda every second day but here are two personal incidences where i was responsible but gards were friendly and left me without fine..may be because they know to diffrentiate b/w big fishes and smart arse? who make petty mistakes....

    1) I am still at L license and was caught at M4 without L
plate in front or rear..they stopped me checked my license and left me...

    2) I was lost near dunghaire and inspit of going straight and coming back, i decided to rush though one way (Very small= 50 mts) when light is red at oppiste side...and as i turned back there was garda on motorbike in front of me who escaped narrow (he came thogh traffic light was red)......i said sorry to him that i am lost and dunknow it's one way...he left me with accepting my apologies...

    any comments !!!

I don't think either of those is a petty mistake. Both were traffic offences commited deliberately, and I am disappointed the gardai let you off.

Yeh, buy a copy of rules of the road before you kill someone or yourself.

Seriously though, you were very lucky, the one way street was a pretty bad mistake!!

How did you get stopped on the M4? I don't think I've ever seen people being pulled for license checks on a motorway. (Plenty of tax/insurance checks on dual carriageways alright, but never on motorways).

But if the garda did his job you'd be here ranting about all gardai and they were all corrupt scum.

I was expecting a thread about a guard helping you in a breakdown, giving directions or maybe giving your pregnant girlfriend/wife a garda escort as you rush to the hospital

    What a letdown:(

get some proper lessons and do your test, then drive on your own, that's just inconsiderate going the wrong way up one ways, (next time for your sake and fellow motorist's) I hope you get caught and fined might make you learn.

Agree with original poster. The Gardai have let me off on occasion too. Always good to treat them with a little respect. It pays off more than you would think.

The thread is about friendly Gardai. Not adhering to the rules of the road or spell check.

i was stopped going the wrong way up a one-way in cienfuegos in cuba in march. no signs on the road or the junction i enterred it from, no arrows, nothing. he pulled me over, took my license, smiled when he saw "irlanda" and accepted my apology in my broken spanish. apparently i said "please thanks for excusing my car ireland hello".

    agree...

don't mind these muppets telling you your gonna kill someone, you swear they never broke a rule on the road, you asked if anyone ever encountered friendly gardai, thats it,

I find generally if you are nice to them they'll be nice to you.

How is this them being friendly? If anything, this is an example of them being lazy.

    thanks for expert comments..

few seems to be unemployed English teachers..

Though i did mistakes but i am a safe driver (I strongly believe)..i never drive after booze and take care of all rules.

    1) i was coming from Tullamore and i was stopped as i entered M4, at the beginning of motor way...it was friday around 10 PM..may be they were looking for drunk drivers.

    2) second time i was lost and very frustrated, i turned back on one way to cover a stretch of just 50 mts...on red light from other side...why i confronted gardai because he jumped red light (he may be in hurry)..

Oh Lord forgive me for all my road sins !!!:D

    Hi guys,

I was driving into city center yesterday, two Guarda officers were checking all cars "windscreens documents". My insurance and NCT were OK but road tax was expired since more than one month (july). I was expecting to be pulled out of the road, but nothing, big smile and I could go through (was not very worried as I paid my tax on internet and had the printed receipt with me, but didn't receive the official document yet).

Basically this i the 3rd time since I am in Ireland (1 year 1/2) that I am controlled by the guarda (previous time was for alcohol test and driving license check).
All the times I found them very friendly and smiling. I come from France and it is quite different there, even if you are 'absolutely clean' they will speak to you as if you were guilty, and the smile is rarely an option.
