Gsoc this kinda 3 groups in 1: There's the group that's into role-playing games, the paintballing stuff (which everyone is interested in) and the console and pc gaming stuff.

Personally I don't have any interest in the role playing stuff and card games, but at the moment that's the way the society is moving. In the last year or 2 they scraped their gaming (console&pc) officer and made their "RPG Officer, Minister for Critical Failures" a more centralised position.
That's actually not correct. The Paintball Officer, the RPG Officer and the LAN/Console Officer all have the exact same level of responsibility.

Don't get me wrong, gsoc does still go frontier X (a local LAN gaming place) and do stuff like that, it's just their kinda moving in the opposite direction to what you're probably interested in Heliosvector.
A LAN is being planned for November in the Students Union. Several were ran last Semester in the SU.

The last time I remember gsoc running anything big in terms of pc gaming was an event 2 years ago called SkyLan, but it was more organised by skynet - the computer society, than the gsoc.
There doesn't seem to be the demand for a big LAN in Limerick. People from beyond Limerick (and possibly Galway) aren't interested in making the journey which is why MidLANs in Athlone has become so big. It's central.

You should keeps tabs at the Gsoc site anyway to see when the next event is on (Gsoc.net).

Yeah, you can play LAN games no problem. Theres a group of about 10 of us that play regularly! Most of us are fourth years though...

If you doing Comp Sys, may God have mercy on your soul.

Why do you say god have mercy? i was actually planning to do so. Iether that course or the game developement one. I know comp systems is more sought after by employers, but game one seems a bit more enjoyable. Or im going to do the networking one aplied computing.

Do you like maths.. the maths in first year are to be polite.. tricky.

Overall the course can be considered quite tough. When i started, 170 people started, 90 or so graduated. A lot of people finished in the first year, some in 2nd year as they stayed on in co-op

Depends on what you are into. People say different things. I like it, found some bits hella tricky, other bits a breeze.

The LAN/Console officer isn't listed on the website & in fairness gsoc is moving away from LAN/console stuff anyway.

There are no details available for that yet. I've asked for details to be posted but as of yet all that's been said is: First I want to know if people are able to come to the event before I do more planning

That's cause gsoc doesn't look outside its own doors. I ran a 25 person thing 2 years ago in the kilmurry and when ye found out about it I remember being contacted so that larger LANs could be organised.

I do! It's just there are no details for the next event.

I dont mind maths it seems. See i am one of those people that can kind of do ok or pass in school without studying. If you asked me if i liked maths last year i would say i Hated it with a passion. This year though i am actuall getting into it, because i have to and studying. Ever since i have started to go over stuff, my lowest test result has been 80% where as i used to be getting just passes (OL). I also think im a bit addicted to game (just a bit) so since im going to leave my consoles at home (seems i dont have a choice in relation to live play) wich will leave me with LOADS of free time to get down to the books (or this case the computer screen)

I like maths when i know what to do but i hate it when im stuck without a clue. im sure thats the same with everyone.

Who knows i may end up doing the networking course as i love the hardware aspect too. I even enjoy taking my pc apart when i clean it or add in new stuff like cards and lights.

Most computer courses have a fair amount of maths. Its part of it, also you get introduced to binary, ternary, octal & hex number systems

The graphics part is heavy on vectors and matrices transformations. You also get a fairly healthy dose of statistical maths (tho all this may have changed).

Are you doing Ordinary Level or Higher Level maths?

Ha ha ha .. there are plenty of more worth while distractions in college. Just remember the three S's of college life.. Social , Study & Sleep. You can only every do 2 in any decent quantity.

When you are socialising your sleep is also high and as such your study is low. When you are studying, you need sleep so you dont get to socialise. And I have left to meet anyone who can do socialise and study!

For the first few weeks, there will be very little to study. But what you learn in those first few weeks is fairly valuable for the rest of your college life. Like the location of the bar, where is the best place to go out, what is the latest time you can get out of bed to make your 9am lecture and the whole waking up and asking the person beside you their name (invest in post-it notes!)

College is the experience and art of learning to balance work and social as to come out with the degree you want.

Oh, you will need sleep regardless. At times you might find yourself not doing yet for some strange reason you can be very tired.

We have Console Days every Wednesday in SU Room 3 from 11 to 6. Feel free to drop by anyone. LAN trips to FrontierX are nearly every Wednedsay evening depending on demand. A LAN was planned for a few weeks ago. No one would commit to going hence why another date has been proposed.

    (a) GSoc is a society based out of the University so is understandably geared towards UL students and alumni and (b) if I'm correct you were in secondary school (Castletroy College?) at the time which is why you didn't appear on our radar.

just kidding, i wish. sleeping is such a waste of time. although i can do with short sleeps.

    meh, sleeping is over-rated ;)

im the same as you when it comes to not studyin, the day before an exam is jus fine, ul find that college exams are quite predictable, for instance; had a math-midterm today, did 2 past papers yesterday, got 80%...

but yeah, lan games work perfectly accross the village network, jus these 4th years like "y2j_mufc" are gettin caught up with their FYP's and their x-boxs, so its been quite.

Now this may not be the same for everyone... but I had an A1 in HL maths and found the maths difficult. I had to learn the greek alphabet for one subject in 1 semester.

As for the sleep issue.. you will need it... believe me.. You sleep but trying to study when you have been out socialising till 5am with a 9am lecture you will fine yourself asleep (especially when its that business one in the concert hall)

We took 450 1st years on a class party to galway. I went at the last min as crew and didnt get home till 6am. I sat in that lecture in the back sleeping for 2 hours.. You just cant do it, listen to someone trying to teach you and fight the will of sleep at the same time.

First you were talking about Limerick in general, now Limerick seems to mean UL. You do realise that a large proportion of the population of Limerick lives outside your "radar". I remember that when Skynet ran their event 2 years ago they looked outside their own doors and got a big turnout (30-40+ people)
