Please help me as I'm in a bit of a quandry and need to move quickly as my electrician is nearly finished wiring my attic. We were talking about the tv and I was telling him I was going to have an a/v receiver and connect that to the tv. He suggested I connect the sky box direct to the tv and the receiver seperately. Would you agree about this? I didn't think it sounded right as any sky movies would lose their benefits of going through the surround sound.

2ndly, what would you use to connect the receiver to the tv? Or is component the only way to do it? Will this lose the effect of an hdmi connection from the dvd player to the reciever? ANy help is greatly appreiciated and so badly needed.

I'm a bit confused as to what you're planning but here goes... bear in mind I never use the video inputs/outputs of an AV amp.

Sky box goes optical/coaxial to AV amp and scart/component to TV

DVD player also goes optical/coaxial to AV amp and scart/component/HDMI to TV

" Will this lose the effect of an hdmi connection from the dvd player to the reciever? "

I don't see any benefit in introducing another unit (the receiver) between DVD and TV unless you NEED video switching. Go direct.
