    Checkered history!

    1996 - 88 Fiat Uno.Was cleaned. Bought at auction in Derry. St£500 + IR£200 VRT + £250 to fix. Didn't even get me home.
1997 - 89 Ford Sierra (borrowed for 2 months). Big problems. £100 in petrol from Kilkenny to Donegal, when petrol was dirt cheap. Crashed it on day I was due to give it back.
2000 - 96 Opel Corsa 1.2. Liked the car. Nippy and economical. Let me down coming back from holdiay. Car was parked in Dun Laoghaire port and wouldn't start. Had to get the bus home and cost £140 to get it lifted back to Donegal.
2003 - 00 Astra. Liked this car too. Good 1.4. Nice Elegance model.
2005 - Ordered new Opel Sport Hatch 150bhp diesel, but Opel didn't want to sell me one so bought a 6 month old Golf GTI.
    2007 - 07 Golf GTI DSG.

I run them both - I like to have the punto round the city as its nicer to drive round town.

'99 206 GTi - Recently sold to a lucky bloke from Limerick. Never had a moments trouble and much like a first girlfriend, I'll never hear a bad word said about her!
'00 Honda S2000 - Recently bought, and to keep the theme up, this is the one who's drop-dead gorgeous and an absolute hoot, but will ultimately leave me a financial (and probably emotional) wreck.

Having typed that, I've literally just realised that the above points about my cars tie-in exactly to my personal life over the past few months. I'm going to have to go outside and get some air!!!

Not really - well, depends if you're referring to speed or 'chuckability'. The CX is fastest, hands down (so very few people realised this at the time.. or even today!), but the Integrale is a brute and was very prone to the famous turbo lag/bend scares (which the CX wasn't - too heavy and somewhat more ponderous, from the off).

The only scary thing about the CX was the economy (there wasn't any... at 240 km/h anyway! :D ) but the thing was on rails right to the end of the speedo. It's nowhere near as 'chuckable' as the Integrale - it corners on rails alright, but it's not truly a sports car like the Integrale, more like a GT.

I used to commute to and from Paris every week (180 miles or so) for a while, and I'd usually find a guy (usually German) in a Beemer / Merc / Porsche up for livening up the tedious commute a bit ;)

... and I've lost count of how many times I left them in the wake as soon as a drop of rain fell down - something of a psychological barrier about going beyond 200 km/h in anything German once the road is a bit wet :D

More stories about epic 'brawls' with the CX than the Integrale, however, that's for sure :)

Started out in life driving my mother's 89 Ford Fiesta five-door, all of 1.1 litres of grunt. Built like a tank, took everything I could throw at it and more, and I threw a lot at it. So did some other cars, the Fiesta invariably would come out better of the two.

First car I bought was in 2000, a 1995 Ford Thunderbird. Decent car, saddled with an automatic transmission. 4.6L V8 pulling 205hp. I ended up falling asleep at the wheel and side-swiping a guardrail. After 145,000 miles, though still in good running order if a bit dented, it was time to retire it. Not a particularly exciting car, but a comfortale cruiser.

Second car I bought was in 2002, a 2001 Chevrolet Camaro T-top, 3.8L V6, pulling 200hp. Not the most reliable car in the world, the transmission/suspension has been causing issues, though at almost 100,000 miles the engine itself seems like it'll go on for ever. Got me across country with everything I owned in the back, and still is the fastest I've driven on the public road: 130mph before I hit the limiter.

First 'Brand New' car I bought is an '05 Audi S4 Cabrio, even though I'm trying to use the Chevy as a daily driver, the Audi's still clocked up 35,000 miles already. With 340hp going to all four wheels, overtaking is a breeze, and I've avoided sand-traps which have stuck mere lesser vehicles. Build quality is not what it should be, though, I am very surprised to see the glove compartment door coming off the hinges, and there's a minor glitch with the convertible top. As a driver's car, though, there's little to compare with the V8 rumbling along with the roof down along a windy road.

Future plans may be to retire the Camaro when the Audi's paid off, and buy one of the new Dodge Challengers.

its about time i got away from the fords :D

My mother's a bit like that. Her first car was a 1975 Ford Fiesta, probably the first of the breed, with round headlights. White. After serving faithfully for ten years, it was time to replace it. She ended up buying an 85 Ford Fiesta, white. Come 1989 it was time to buy again, and she beelined to the Ford store, having been so happy with the previous Ford offerings. Dad just sighed and said "If you must get a Fiesta again, at least change the colour." So she bought a blue one.

1990 Ford Fiesta van 1.1 (paid £800, sold £500 9 months/10k miles later) thirst for oil

1992 Opel Astra 1.4i (paid £2,700, sold £1,000 ~2years/35k miles later) minimal maintenance, a couple of DIY oil/filter changes and a set of plugs, this one took lots of abuse

1997 Fiat Bravo 1.4 (paid €5,600, sold €2,750 ~2years / 45,000 miles later) steering way too light but chassis much more capable than steering would have you believe, kept a main dealer service history on this one, only because it was nearly as cheap as DIY servicing

1998 Nissan Primera 2.0TD (paid €2,800, sold €2,300 ~18 months / 35,000 miles later) tractor engine, needed a diesel for economy, pretty decent handling though, all DIY maintenance, thankfully I slashed the amount of miles I was driving and freed myself from the tractor

2000 Alfa 156 1.8t-spark (paid €4,500, still have 2 years / 26,000 miles later) all DIY maintenance, not nearly as tricky as some would have you believe, longest I've owned and still not bored with it.

As you can see, I have a major aversion to spending lots of money upgrading my car. Assuming I'd get something in the region of €2,500 for the alfa, average depreciation works out at ~€1000/year or ~€0.05 per mile, fairly miserly.

When the prices come into line with my spending habbits, I fancy a Volvo S60 T5 as my next motor.
