    Hi,

Anyone know where I can get a tracker fitted? GPS. I know I can google it but they all throw up subscription services with monthly charges.

Any once off payment services out there?

Was also thinking of getting one installed, and only paying for tracking if it was stolen?

    Suggestions please?:o

    Thanks:D

No, you would need access to something that can work out its position from Orbit.
So unless you have your own personal Satellite network its a no-go.

The only other type would be one you remove from the car, hook up to the PC and it will tell you where its been. Not much good if it has been robbed :D

There is some GSM tracking services in the UK, but these don't work reliably in the republic

Tracker are now operating in ROI, but currently only on BMW's. They are expanding their products though so it may be something they launch fairly soon.

Looking at the UK website you can do a one off payment, but still pricey circa £700.

I think unless you car is worth in the region of 100k a tracker is not much financial sense as the car you get back when it is found will most likely be raped beyond racognition and you would be best getting the insurance settlemeant and never seeing it again as it will never be the same car to you.

Theres services available here that work fine, there costly though and mostly aimed at fleet vehicles but of course can be added to any car.

Like an off the shelf GPS unit worth €100 hooked up to a mobile phone which would reply to a query text with its current coordinates...
I briefly googled but didn't find one, love to know if someone does.

Not if you know your insurance won't pay out the full amount and then go looking for the same spec car again. I have one on my car and I can shut down the car when it slows down etc so they can take my car from the drive with the keys but they won't get to far up the road

Somebody above said it's not possible - crazy talk.

Of course it's possible, but as already mentioned it's only in operation for fleets, and would be pretty unfeasible for an average car unless it's worth an absolute mint. I've worked fairly extensively with GPS tracker devices that use the GSM network, my fathers company hires them out - if you're interested or require any info feel free to PM me, I might be able to sort you with a permanent solution.

If only we had mobile tracking here like www.followus.co.uk then you could have a gsm tracker for a $34 per unit as in http://www.alibaba.com/offerdetail/15669418/Sell_GSM_Car_Tracker.html

I've seen the GSM tracking technology and its absolutely rubbish outside of Dublin. Its only accurate to about 4 - 5 miles, 20 miles in some regions. Thats why the taxi text service was abandoned outside Dublin. Even when the Gardai petition the court to get a location fix its only accurate to around 5 - 10 miles based on the local cell tower.

You could rig up some sort of GPS unit that txt's its location to a number i guess. Get 2 meteor sims and that free txts for life, you'd have it for 20 euro a month then.

Something like this would do it:
    http://www.mercateo.com/p/108EL-505(2d)6610/Funkmodul_250R1.html

I believe you send it an sms and it will return its positioning.

Would be pretty easy to setup.

That looks good. Can you work out if it interacts with the car at all - can you text 'stop engine' to it and have it cut the engine etc? I don't speak a word of german.

Just found an english version http://www.rfsolutions.co.uk/acatalog/GSM_Telemetry.html

Can't work out if its able to easily attach to a car to trigger if teh alarm goes off or to cut the engine on command. I emailed them, will let you know what they have to say.
