Regular expressions javascript

Hi
I cant find any good javascript pattern tutorials that tell me how to do what I want to do.

I need a pattern which will allow (a letter followed by 5 digits) or (6 digits on their own).

I cant seem to find what allows an or.

I thought | would work.

can you help me out.
[a-z]d(5) | d(6)

Something like this would seem more correct [a-z]\d{5}|d{6}
Wrap the whole thing in () if you extend the expression. The number of digits you want should be in the {} as () is used for grouping and the digit is \d. A d on it's own looks for a literal d.
