Irish pound notes - great yokes!

Not having 20 quid worth of coins on your person all the time, fantastic!

In the old days (pre January 2002) you could count your change in your pocket, the coins we're different sizes and colours (what a time to be alive!), the 50p was even a different shape, fantastic, great stuff.

Nowadays you need take out a monocle to work out how much you have.

Apparently, there was even older money before the old money, but I am not au fait with this.

    Irish pound note

    Irish 50p

Would you like to roll things back?

10c, 20c and 50c coins can get annoying alright

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I tend not to pay for things in coins, and I sort them all out every few months and change them for cash.

Sorting out 1c and 2c coins is beyond headwrecking.

I thought the pound coin was pretty cool as was the brass coloured 20p. Link here.

pound coins were cool, they were big, but they were light, and as always, easy to decifer.

the bird on the 50p was a seagull afaik (so so tempted to say 'YORE MA!).

    I still have loads of old money. I have the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 50p, £1(coin), £5 & £20

I used to colour in 2p coins with a gold marker and pass 'em off as 20p's. I ate some amount of cola bottles that year :D

Wish I had kept one of each coin :( But I probably spent them all on sweets

There's probably some down the side of the couch actually!

Don't you love how the Toll bridges have a sign saying "No Copper coins".

Back to pounds, shillings and pence, I say. Decimalisation is for softies.

OP: the reason for the 1 and 2 euro coins is because the 1 euro note would resemble used toilet tissue after about a week. The fivers are bad enough as it is.

It was a woodcock, the design was originally on old farthings (a quarter of an old penny).

    ...But google says woodcock too.

How much wood would a woodcock cock if a woodcock could cock wood?

Let's go electronic and get rid of hauling about silly old currency. Debit cards? Credit cards?

The government already charge us for using our own money with debit (laser) and credit cards though.

If memory serves we actually got more for the Punt against the English pound than we do with the Euro. Arse to the € back to the IR£.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,766 ✭✭✭Reku

While I do feel nostalgic for the old money the euro makes shopping abroad far more simple... would have to know if the euro had any benefit on the economy or not, I could vote either way.

Bartering is the best way. At least with bartering, you know that a new camel is never more than a bucket of shiny beads and a red haired girlfriend away.

Just get rid of the 1c and 2c coins and round all the prices of stuff to multiples of 5. They are most unuseful!

Wow, I found an old 50p piece and brought it to the pub on Monday evening.

What was on the 5p - a pig, a boar or a cow?

    I have a some Dublin Milennium 50ps, a 2000 Milennium pound coin.

I remember the 20ps came out, and my dad gave us one...ONE...each. Shiney.

Well, we also got more for the euro back then, than we do now. The punt was fixed against the euro way back (1997 I think?), so at that point you got the same amount of GBP whether you paid in punts or euros.

I have to admit I liked the 20p and £1 coins, but I much prefer the neatness of the euro coins. Much easier to count and arrange.

I miss the old money. £20 quid would do you for a week. Now it seems the €50 is the old 20. No value to money anymore.

Remember if you had a £50 punt note? You felt rich. I loved the old fiftys. :(

Now that's proper money. They were feckin' huge, and got bigger as the denominations went up. I remember the first time I saw an old £50 note, you could nearly wallpaper a room with one.
