Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A minimum of 7 GB free disk space on the system partition for x86-based operating systems and a minimum of 12 GB free disk space for x64-based operating systems.

    They got to be kidding.

The service pack will add support for Direct3D 10.1, adding application programming interfaces (APIs)

All I want is my EAX to work once more... :(

Not going to happen the audio stack in Vista was completely re-written and is pure software only no hardware acceleration support. If you want EAX then it must go through OpenAL which provides hardware acceleration and EAX support or use Creatives Alchemy app which converts DirectSound API calls in certain games into OpenAL.

The space requirements are reclaimed after it installs I presume it is for emergency backups keeping copies of all system files for restore points etc during the install of the service pack, does not state how much though I suppose it's like with XP when you had the option to remove the backup data of the prior version of Windows.
Installing the service pack will require a large amount of free disk space (7 GB for x86 and 12 GB for x64). However, most of this space will be reclaimed after installation.

I'd like to know how much.

I'm asuming that this will be straightforward enough to slipstream on a Vista installation disc...
gonna switch over to a 64 bit version of Vista soon, but might wait until this comes out and kill 2 birds with 1 stone...

Yep thanks for your reply, I do have Creatives 'Alchemy' app both the hacked (free one) and the fully paid for one but most of my games still wont work with it, EG Tomb raider Anniversary. Oh well I'll just wait till MS bring out something new in the sound card market as thats the only reason I can see why they did it.

    Peace out

There was a video on Channel9 with the audio devs explaining it from what I can recall as it was quite a while back it boiled down to there being lots of old code hanging around in XP's audio stack it was generally a mess. In order to correct many of the problems with audio in Windows they simply threw everything out and wrote a new audio stack instead.

As for hardware acceleration that was deemed to be a dieing tech and caused as many problems {if not more} as it brought benefits.

Finally the Xbox 360 audio API was ported to Windows through Direct-X and is fully multi-threaded and supports lots of fancy stuff for games so if developers want that they can use it I cant remember the name Xact or Xaudio.

Tomb Raider the game won't work on Vista or just the audio do you mean? If it is the game then there are some settings wrong somewhere as I have that game running fine on Vista. If it is the audio then I misunderstood, apologies.

What are the advantages of 64 bit Vista, is it any faster?

It's the audio I mean. The game runs fine but wont run with the Alchemy app. Without it it's two channel only with no EAX. Yep I know it's gone for good... Fine game all the same.

In a general sense no for 32-bit apps, some 64-bit apps can benefit a small amount and there are certain specialist software that does get a bigger boost in performance & finally some apps wont benefit at all.

Really depends on the type of app and how it was coded for example the 64-bit Firefox (unofficial) gets very big gains in performance whereas 64-bit Paint.NET make zero difference to the end user.

The biggest benefit 64-bit brings is that the amount of RAM the system can use is greatly increased you can use 4GB+.

Explains why my laptop has 2.5G ram and can only use 2G.

They say it'll be out in Q1 2008.
Dingding - a 32 bit machine can use up to 4GB (really about 3.75GB). I reckon your laptop probably shares its system RAM with the graphics card, so that's probably why you're not seeing that other 512mb.

Installing beta MS service packs on a machine you need is probably not that clever :)

Good advice. I remember the beta of XP SP2. 3 of my machines took it no problem. The 4th one went kinda apesh!t.:)

Question: Would any new service packs released by Microsoft be free? I presume they would but just wondering...

I ask because the last 2 pc's i've had, i've never had to get a service pack... (The first was a Windows 98 SE, the second is XP Service Pack 2) I currently have a new laptop with Vista Ultimate...

Yep the service pack would be free.
