    EU broadband penetration reaches 20%
    Published: Wednesday 5 September 2007

Broadband penetration in the EU reached 19.9 percent as of the first quarter, bringing the region in line with US and Japan. According to the bi-annual Broadband Scorecard from the European Competitive Telecoms Association, there were 84 million broadband lines in the EU at the end of Q1, up 16 percent from six months earlier. Eight EU countries now have broadband penetration levels above 20 percent, and Northern Europe leads the table with the Netherlands having the highest penetration at 33 percent, followed by Denmark, Finland and Sweden. At the bottom of the rankings were Greece, Poland, Slovakia and Cyprus with penetration still below 10 percent. The results showed an acceleration in growth from the previous six-month period, which the industry group attributes to the growing use of local loop unbundling, cable and alternative technologies for broadband services. Cable now accounts for 15 percent of broadband connections, while DSL dominates with 83 percent. The ECTA highlighted that in 17 countries of the 25 examined there are still very low levels of unbundling. The lobby group called on the European Commission to use its review of the telecoms regulatory framework to boost the power of regulators to enforce unbundling. The ECTA agrees with the proposal to require network operators to separate services provision from network management when other regulatory measures have failed to improve competition.

as with every ECTA scorcard survey this CENTURY we are behind everyone except Greece .

Full data here , even Karlin could read it :p

14% we get . We would not even get that were it not for all the Ripwaves and Clearwires that were reported as BB by Comreg.

We have 94k wireless and 7.5k 'undefined' within the overall 602k figure. One in 6 that is. Columns ap and aq in the first sheet .

Furthermore we are not the fastest growing . Greece Cyprus and Slovakia Poland are growing way faster than we are . As is Turkey .

We may even overtake Portugal in the next one thereby putting someone between us and Greece for the first time ever.

Karlin and Eamonn will fairly coo at each other on Newstalk when that happens to be suUUUurre ......even though the figures will refer to Dempseys watch .
