    Syria 'fires on Israel warplanes'

Syria says its air defences have opened fire on Israeli war planes which had entered Syrian airspace overnight.
Israeli planes had "dropped ammunition" over desert areas of Syria, before being forced to leave, according to the official Syrian news agency, SANA.

Israel radio quoted an unnamed Israeli army source as saying no air strike had been carried out, Reuters agency said.

The Syrian news agency says the action took place "without causing human or material loss".

Syria and Israel have remained technically at war since the seizure of the Golan Heights in 1967.

Tensions between Israeli and Syria have been rising in recent months. Both countries' leaders have said they do not want a war, while accusing the other side of arming for a conflict.

Syria says it last fired at Israeli warplanes in June 2006, when Israeli aircraft flew over the summer residence of the Syrian president, while he was inside.

    Israel acting the bollox?

Russian bears were apparently on a probing mission towards the u.k last night/this morning, some typhoons showed their teeth and turned them around.

The Tiffies went up a few weeks ago in a similar situation. F-16s from Norway were also involved on both occasions.

I cant believe that the Russians are still flying these post war antiques in this day and age, surely they should take pity on them.

They only started making it a regular thing this year. They must have found some money to fuel up a formation of heavy bombers, their military has been cash strapped for years.

I believe they sent up 11 aircraft, a mix of Recce and heavy bombers. Some were even Tu-160s!. They have not been seen much and are the Russian airforce pride and joy heavy bomber.

Yeah, i dont know what russia is playing at really, you'd think they would have more respect for them after the U.K bailed their submariners out last year.

Sure the B52's still in service 50 years along and with plans to keep them flying the same amount of time again. The old bears were the workhorses of the cold war and its cool to still see them going.

    Remember the old Nasa/Soviet joke..?

Nasa spent millions to develop an increidbly advanced ink pen that will work in space...Soviet cosmonauts just brought pencils...:)

I was on about the Tu-160 Blackjacks, not the Tu-95 Bears. I can see the Bears going for a while yet but not as long as the '52s after they get re-engined.

The Tu-160 only officially entered service in 2005 even though they have had them on the flight lines since the mid '80s.
