ps: I also got that mouse lag but it seemed to go away after I upped sensitivity to about half way.

I also got the fatal error GL issue (latest driver - the one for bioshock). the fix on the forum worked butit was still a bit annoying. havent tested to see if this will have any adverse affects on BF or Bioshock.

This is the bit I like the most about QW (other than how much fun sniping is). Its like having 3/4 maps rolled into one. The action starts off at one point, then moves to another and so forth but there's nothing to stop you going off to some quiet mountain away from the action and sniping people. On the other hand, with the BF games its quite easy to find yourself in places where there's no action going on at all. At least with QW, you're never far from it.

Mini review after dipping in to this on and off last night, mainly played as a Strogg constructor/technician :
    Pro's:
It looks lovely , huge map , no slowdown, stuttering or lag at all on my (OKish) PC.
    Nice big maps
Not as much of a resource hog as BF, no massive loading times (apparently if you change servers and the new one is running the same map as the one you left , there's no loading time whatsoever, although I haven't confirmed this yet)Seems to be vista friendly too (I've even been able to use the Windows Flip 3D, alt-tabby thing , and can the game will happily keep playing)
Rather than racking up scores by killing other players , you can accept missions to gain points (i.e. defend this point for 2 minutes, stop opposition fixing bridge , lay 10 mines), so it caters to those people who don't have the reaction times of a 14 year old being drip fed red bull.(i.e.: old slow feckers like me)
Constructors can build gun turrets/rocket launchers ala Team fortress-Fun!.
Technicians can canabalise oppositions corpses to make spawnpoints Glee!.

    Con's:
Can be very confusing as to know what the hell to do .
    UI is a bit messy
Insta-death from "jebuswherethehelldidthatcomefrom" snipers can be annoying.
Vehicles not as intuitive to control as BF, also not quite as responsive.
I've yet to work out how to use the damn jetpacks
The GDF(humans) are a lot more boring to play than the Strogg, so expect massive imbalance on servers.
Punkbuster (buggy piece of excreta , why do game publishers use it?) problems.{being told you need to enable it to connect to a server, when its already enabled}.
Given the teamwork needed, if you're playing as a support class on a server full of randoms , I can see it being not much fun

The demo's worth trying anyway , I can see myself buying the full version , although with team fortress 2 is being released so soon after , I might just keep my money for that.

Dont think much of it at all so far.
Okish visuals, gameplay is pure arcadey which i dislike, all this jumping around etc.

BF2 is far better in gameplay department imo.

    All the hype for what?

Battlefield 2 - All the hype for what ?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,711 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

I only mention BF2 because most names i see here play or played BF2 and seek a replacement and hope ETQW is that replacement,i know i did.
I could of mentioned 2142 plus a few more.
Im not a huge fan of either and rarely play either but both are superior to ETQW from what i see of the demo which doesnt say much for QW.
Since you mention it,BF2 got nowhere near the hype ETQW has got.
The great white hope that was going to inject something fresh and new into pc fps gaming just hasnt delivered imo, again im basing this on the demo, i doubt different maps coming with full game will change my mind.

Pyro Incase you hadnt noticed the thread is about ETQW demo not a BF2 demo hence why i mentioned ETQW hype.

I have no idea what I was expecting but now that I stop and think ..ET:QW , I mean the name should have given it away if I wasn't so stupid , the teamplay of Enemy Territory Mixed with the gameplay of Quake .

Unfortunately it will be very hard to find a server where the gameplay aspect with come to the fore , this will be played as TDM and will be full of teenagers with reaction and bunny hoping skills far in advance of mine . Some of the people in the clan have uninstalled it already . It's just not the kind of game we were looking for .

the beta was muck - maybe the demo will be better - holding my judgement for now but I am not optimistic about it

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,339 ✭✭✭✭LoLth

I have to admit that the demo is not doing it for me either. However, I thought the BF2142 demo was muck and I am enjoying the full game. I'll reserve final judgement until I play the full game online.

My advice to everyone is to give it time. As I said before the game is a bit over complicated and can take time to get to grips with it, but when you do its awesome.

Also I think people will be surprised at the amount of teamplay that goes on on public servers. Certainly at the start of the open beta it was pretty bad, everyone running around not knowing what to do, but once everyone had a good idea of the game public teamplay became pretty common.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,711 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Dont think i can be bothered giving a game that feels so arcadey time.
On the flipside if i did enjoy the actual combat part of the game i would give it time.
I dont doubt the teamplay element is really good but for me the mechanics of running, fighting, shooting all feels too simplistic and console like for want of a better word and to me this feeling is the most important factor in any fps moreso than any form of teamplay but thats just me.
Having said that im sure it is a fun game but for me personally i like a bit of realism and a feeling when you kill someone "yeah that felt good",games like DODS,Red Oechestra,a few of the BF2 relaism mods give this feeling to me.
Its hard to explain, its like a personal thing i suppose.

ETQW`s setting reminds me of natural selection but the difference is natural selection was smaller scale ofcourse.
Its a great theme and setting for sure but my personal feeling while playing is this is like something from my PS3 and not what im used to on pc,i can see it being popular with teenagers like Jonski said.
Oh i forgot to mention that mouse lag is just ridiculous.

And our heafty Splash Damage cheques are in the post.

Thats fair enough Dcully, if realism is your thing then ETQW isn't for you.

Well they the only ones who played it more than 4 days, tbh im not a big fan i can see why it could be good, but still its the lasers really we all want modern weapons and after playing Cod4 i can say thats not a team game in the slightest :D

I hope the full game does it justice as i just dont like the valley map it forces you be a team all plough tru the middle, Bf2 gives you the option of going around the Valley doesnt your either in the thick of it or walking towards the thick of it.

Granted the game plays stunningly i mean no issues everything works no lag, no slowdown, no hiding for a minute while Pb updates or the server wobbles. In game server finder works everything just works can argue with stuff like that.

Just its good but its not gonna get 100 plus hours out of me online until i see more maps with more variance, i havent played Bf2 in about 7 months as it became a pain in the hole to play oH Karkand again.....with no vehicles.....yay.

demo makes me want to buy the game, so its done its job but i still want more out of it.

Well all maps are objective based, thats a given. Its either going to be build something, blow it up, escort it or steal it. Island is a class map, in it you have to steal a briefcase and bring it to the sat tower to broadcast is, so this part of the objective is CTF etc.

    Says who?

I know quite a few who played beta for a long time, got bored with it,played the demo and uninstalled it.
Many games forums are saying exaclty what us non fanboys are saying :)

    its fuppin brilliant :D

But not a team based game in any shape or form, im sure you could TS who you just nailed and im sure 2 people could take out a street together or maybe more but its like the original mohaa online but better much much better.

I could see myself joining any server and playing on my own for a period ie not like DOD:S where after 20 minutes you bored, COD4 has nailed everything a single player online multiplayer game needs.

Only fault with the beta level is that its very linear you go this way or nothing, there are some rooms you can go into but i hoped for all the houses to be accessible, but its only a beta but **** it s brilliant. shame about the goddamn gamepad.

On QW i hope more levels and a bit more than you have to fight here style gameplay will save it. Snipers have **** all places to snipe from which sucks as you have to go down the main street.

Meh. As much of a team based game, I can still go sniping. Pick a spot, and pick off the enemy, untill they kill me.

Only thing I don't like are the names of the Strogg weapons, and the fact that some of the Human weaponry has no "equal" in the Strogg weaponry.

I prefer it to BF2, as once you get a point done, that's it. Saying that, I played RTCW:ET for a long time (probably more than BF2), so I may be biased to ET.

Oh not true. The last FPS I played competitively was Quake 2 and this is the first game since then to re-ignite the bug. The only thing that is universely true is that tastes vary.

Anyone expecting 'realism' and or bullet physics real time ballistics and bullet drop blah blah from a game featuring aliens that eat humans and use body parts merged with machines for thier own bodies, need to get a fcuking grip, tbh.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,711 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Natural selection features aliens and is a lot more realistic than this so no need to get a "fcuking grip" at all.
I dont think anyone expected realism but many didnt expect arcade muck either ,then again it is quake afterall so no surprise.

Either way realism doesnt neccessarily mean more fun for some,it boils down to taste as always.

If it were up to you, the only game anyone would play is red orchestra, and some obscure hyper realistic driving sim. And we'd all work in grey little cubicles and listen to enya and drive a nissan micra, cause thats your view of the world, isnt it cully??

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,711 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

    LOL what total BS.

For the record i play many games on my PS3 and my young lads wii so theres your wild assumption thrown out the window already

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,711 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Just to add , it seems you need to practice what you preach and "get a fcuking grip"
To further compound the insanity of your bizzare statement im actually enjoying the demo now, when played with friends instead of joe public it can be mighty fun.
We had a cracking game lastnight :)

PS: A response like like suggests to me you have an issue with me?
If you do thats what pms are for.

I am an avid battlefield 2 and 2142 fan and those games are awesome but I would like to point out, the guns in 2142 never felt very real, sure they were a bit more realistic but I love it in the demo when I fire the assault rifle, the sounds are amazing and it feels good I guess for a lack of a better word. The graphics are also far superior to 2142, and I think once people get used to the objective mechanic and teams start to use it properly, there are going to be some awesome games to be had, 2142 improved the battlefield 2142 franchise with "titan mode" but then you still had the same problem of people camping corridors where the gaming turned out to be "who has the biggest grenade". Not to mention vehicles always used to be a pain with pilots ruling the sky in battlefield 2. Quake wars has maybe taken this a little too far but it still returns battle back to the infantry and away from powerful vehicles like the cyclops.
