Table pc in car, voltage?

    Sorry if i posted in the wrong place.

    I've got a Compaq tablet pc, basically functions as a laptop. I want to be able to charge it in the car. The "laptop" takes an input of 18.5 volts and the nearest converter i can find has an output of 18 volts. I wonder if that half of a volt will make a difference or could the internal laptop PSU burn out eventually under the constraint?

    No it will be fine at 18V. Just don't go over.

    Your tablet may not perform as well though because it's not getting full power (e.g be slightly slower).

    After googling I can see the web is littered with car chargers that do 18.5 volts. If you can get your hands on one of these and wire it direct to the cigarette lighter it may just solve your problems.

    Remember it doesn't have to be a HP charger, go spurious, cheaper and just as reliable.

    Amperage is more important than Voltage in this case. The laptop is looking for a certain Watt PSU (Watt = Volts x Amps). The difference of 0.5v is not going to be a factor as long as the total wattage meets or exceeds the requirements.

    Thanks for the advice!

    Aye, the converter is up to 5amps at 18volts and the tablet uses 3.5amps, so i should be alright. Now i only need to find somewhere convinient to buy one.

    maybe get a 12v/220v convertor and plug a conventional AC/DC adaptor into it.
