Flamingoes and shrimp!

This question came up at lunchtime the other day and we were a bit stumped. Flamingoes are pink seemingly because of the prawns/shrimp they eat, the thing is shrimp are a grey colour until cooked when they then turn pink! Obviously the shrimp are still alive when the birds eat them..so where does the pink colouring come…

Have you never seen a crowd of flamingos hunched over the Camping Gaz:D

Digestion has the same effect, releasing the orange pigment which is similar to that in carrots!
