More exciting than half the crap in this thread anyway. I'd take an Esprit over an Evo or a Gallardo any day of the week.

Over an Evo, yes. Over a Gallardo, are you mad?!

No, because the Gallardo is a rubbish car. The whole point of owning a Lamborghini is that it's a monster, a big horse of a thing that makes people's eyes pop out of their head when they see it, makes them cry out with lust when they hear it. If it's a bastard to drive, all the better. But the Gallardo is just a watered-down version of the Murcielago, and even the Murcielago doesn't subscribe to Lambo tradition imho, since apparently it's much easier to drive than the Diablo or the Countach. However at least the Murcielago still a jaw-dropper. The Gallardo will make you look, but not cream yourself. It completely defeats the purpose of owning a Lamborghini.

So yes, I'd take an Esprit over a Gallardo. Or, more accurately, I'd take the Gallardo and sell it, and then I'd buy an Esprit out of the change left over from the Countach or Diablo I'd buy out of the proceeds.

Your reasons for sugesting the "Gallardo is a rubbish car" are not compelling!
While it may not retain the less desirable traits of its Lamborghini predecessors and may not even have the visual impact, by most accounts it's a fantastic car and hugely capable. I'm sure the engineers and designers who made it knew what they were doing are not in the business of making junk any more.

I've been lucky to have been in both a V8 Esprit and a Gallardo and I can safely say that an Esprit is more 'rubbish' in every department, asides the wheels...

Neither are yours for suggesting it's not, so let's just agree that different people like different cars for different reasons.

I hear what your saying, but the price between the 2 is not that much. I think the Gallardo is between 110-115pounds and the murci is £160. Im sure a second hand murci would be even less.

This thread should be made sticky.

A glut of goodies today, a new M5 (first one I've seen), but this took the rarity prize.

Looks much better than the standard model, beautiful seats and the carbon roof makes it, along with the wheels.
Verrry rare car alright.....see a Ford F150 in Clonsilla every day.....fcukin huuge....makes the Ford Escort Estate parked beside it look like a dinky

No it shouldn't because then nobody would read it!

I must disagree. The Gallardo is compact, balanced, far from lacking in visual drama and has a handy 500bhp to back it up. A similar power-to-weight ratio to the Murcielago (which while admittedly breathtaking is far too wide) in a more compact form means it is actually the better drivers car.

I hear what you are saying that Lamborghinis must be brutes but anyone who calls a Gallardo "watered-down" misses the point somewhat - you are basing your pre-conception on recent history only. The Miura was not a brute, or a "bastard to drive". Instead it was just better than the equivalent Ferrari, much like the Gallardo is better than the equivalent Ferrari. Lambo lost their way with the Diablo - and even the later Countachs.

Martin Brundle panned the Gallardo (and Murcielago) saying that they didn't handle right. Don't forget he's a TVR salesman, and just doesn't like 4wd (which the Diablo was too, bear in mind)

PS: I love the Gallardo - this car will save Lamborghini.

Again, it's a matter of personal opinion. You think Lambo lost their way with the Diablo, I think Audi have taken them down a populist, boring route. You'd probably hate the Diablo, I'd absolutely adore one. And to be honest, up until these latest cars I would never, ever compare a Lamborghini and a Ferrari. They're just not in the same class. Apart from the racing monsters, I think Ferraris are hairdresser's supercars. That's not the same as saying that they're bad cars, in fact I love some of them. I'd just prefer a Lamborghini.

No surprise that Brundle panned the late models btw, TVR's are just smaller, cheaper, British Lamborghinis. Brutal, difficult cars that are a challenge to drive. Which is kinda why I'd give my left nad for either one. RWD. Manual. Give the spare driveshaft and paddles to someone else, I don't want them.

(The word "compact" made me cringe btw. Supercars shouldn't be compact. The entire concept makes me puke. :))

The whole idea behind Lamborghini cars is to be a better Ferrari. As I'm sure you're aware, Ferruccio Lamborghini was a wealthy tractor maker who demanded a more luxurious GT-esque Ferrari from Enzo. Enzo snubbed him, so in typical italian style Ferruccio decided he'd make it himself. The definitive Lamborghini is the Miura, with the early Countach a worthy successor. The later Countachs and Diablos were travesties born under the questionable guidance of a number of surrogate parents - including Chrysler. Audi is the last, and when you consider to emotive capital in the brand they have done a remarkably good job of not cashing in on it. Still no Lambo SUV (unless you count the slightly insane LM002, again born under Chrysler)

PS - I would not class the Gallardo a "supercar" - instead it is meant as a day-to-day sports car, like an exclusive 911. It's predecessors were the Jalpa and Uracco - far less useable, but arguably even prettier.

No doubt it was, 40 years ago. Times change, so do intentions. I have no idea what Lamborghini's intentions are now, but I'd still consider putting them in the same category as Ferrari pretty much the same as putting a TVR Griffith in a road test with a Mazda MX5. Great cars both, but chalk and cheese.

I see a Gallardo once a week, cos my cousin has or had one, they are small, and low, and not too visually loud. I prefer a countach anyday, which is why im shopping for a testarossa soon.................
But to say a gallardo is worth a swap for an elise is madness. :D:D

Back to to topic...more rarity, or not, as the case may be.

M roadster - nice noise and should have had the hood down as it was nice n' sunny (not portrayed by the picture), but the Esprit is cooler.

Spotted in Stresa, northern italy this weekend.
A Murcielago (specially for you, dahamsta)
    murcielago.jpg
A weird merc - 4 pipes, no badges, giant wheels but very little bling. Maybe a debadged S65 AMG?
    weirdmerc.jpg
Yet another Bentley - they're common as muck there too - I saw 4 on the weekend.
    yawn.jpg
Also saw a White over blue DS, which cheered me up no end. No pictures, though.

In Mulloghmore (can never spell it - it's in Sligo) yesterday afternoon a TVR Sagaris, maroon, northern reg - the sidewards tail pipes look bizarre but sound great - looks really uncomfortable though, and really small discs on the rear wheels - don't know how much i'd be trusting them - i suppose driving it would probably be a different story.....................some day pinky, some day.............
