OK, so i passed my exam to get a long arm gun license today.
Mind you, i havent got a clue about guns :)

so while i know all the legalities about owning and using a gun in Victoria australia, im wondering if i might get some expert advice on what the hell a gun is!

now, ive already decided that the pump action shotguns, the ak-47s and the sniper rifles of this world are not for me ;)

however, what i would like is if someone can direct me to somewhere where i can read up on what the various bits and pieces are.
like, what exactly is an air rifle, and why choose one? what does having different weight ammunitions do for you? what do you actually need if you are going to be in a club and enter competitions? apart form pretending to be in the commandoes, do you reall need a scope?

all these questions and more i have! so if anyone knows any sites where i can do my own research instead of posting up stupid questions here (i will of course read back over the threads here as well :)), id be very appreciative.

    try this

    http://www.ssaa.org.au/newssaa/becoming%20a%20shooter/becomingashooter.htm
They seem to advise buying the gun before joining the club- I would advise the opposite: go to the club first and get an idea of wht you would like.
It is nearly impossible to get pump action shotguns or semiauto rifles in Australia.

join the SSAA, for the insurance and the magazines its only $67 a year.

    Where are you in Vic?

May I suggest going to a range/s, have a look around and talk to people, they will probably relish the chance to talk guns with you.

I take it once you get a licence you can go to the gun shop and buy any single shot rimfire or centrefire rifle? Does the dealer simply write in what you got on the licence?

Is it possible to get semi auto rifles at all in Victoria?

    something like that.

and while you can get them, my licence doesnt cover them. im not sure what you need, but it think its government jobs etc, and specialist positions (roo culling etc)

the rules differ sligtly from state to state, I livedin South Australia for 5 years, there once you had a license, you could go into a gunshop choose your gun, the gunshop filled up a firearm application form and sent to the local firearms branch, 28 days later the permit arrived and you brought this back to the gun shop. You could now pick up your gun. You could now bring the gun to your local police station to have it registered ( leave it in the case unloaded with the bolt removed - the police were a bit sensitive about this) the police man would then remove the gun and register the details- itseems a bit OTT but it was a walk in the park compaired to here.

If you are into hunting one of the easier ways to get involved is to join conservation group, and get on a goat or pig cull, Also the min calibre for deer is 270 in Vic.
