Apple shuns Linux users

I read on Slashdot that Apple is going out of its way to stop the newer iPods from working with Linux by using some hash comparison on the iPod's music database -- unless, that is, someone manages to reverse engineer it.

What do you think? Is this to try and force people into using Macs (well, hardly PCs) or trying to crack down on people somehow managing to do naughty things with DRM-laiden tunes?

dont think apple have any problems with their drm being abused... except the odd time. Probably just trying to lock people into itunes and their music store as much as possible. Being such a popular product line, should be work arounds made available

It's a bit stupid really if you ask me. For 95% of people or more the iTunes and iPod combo does the trick perfectly and apple make money. They've got a decent enough record compared to others with regard to their OS etc. so they should keep their copybook clean.

Agreed. There's no need to damage the good relations between Apple and Linux/other Unix-like OSes.

I see there's a hack already, since yesterday I think.

Well the fact that you can run linux ON the ipod isn't a great start for them.
